The premise of the film is summed up here as: \u201cTrapped in the Library of Alexandria as religious riots flare on the city\u2019s streets, [the astrologer-philosopher] <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/yet-another-controversial-church.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hypatia<\/a> battles to save the collected wisdom of the ancient world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">5.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/index.asp?layout=festivals&amp;jump=story&amp;id=1061&amp;articleid=VR1117985738&amp;cs=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that Gale Ann Hurd will produce and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0004121\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mikael Salomon<\/a> will direct <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/12\/newsbites-depp-crusade-del-toro-grace.html#6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mortal Armour: The Legend of Galahad<\/a><\/i>, a \u201cperiod romance\u201d about \u201cyoung Galahad\u2019s quest for the Holy Grail.\u201d  Salomon is a Danish cinematographer who was Oscar-nominated for his work on <i>The Abyss<\/i> (1989) and <i>Backdraft<\/i> (1991) and then became a director, working mostly in TV; his only theatrical films to date are <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0001I562S\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">A Far Off Place<\/a><\/i> (1993) and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/6305222894\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hard Rain<\/a><\/i> (1998).<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">6.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117985632.html?categoryid=28&amp;cs=1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> and the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/hr\/content_display\/news\/e3i9808673cbfb6ec1faf6934e6a3585e4d\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> report that Johanna Wokalek has replaced <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/newsbites-real-girl-pope-joan-lucas.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Franka Potente<\/a> as the title character in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/newsbites-joan-chariots-hour-lives.html#1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pope Joan<\/a><\/i>, \u201cwhich recounts the ninth-century legend of a woman who disguises herself as a man in order to educate herself and ultimately ascends the papal throne\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">7.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117986147.html?categoryid=13&amp;cs=1&amp;nid=2562\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo and producer Bela Tarr are developing \u201ca film about the 15th century sodomy trial of Italian genius Leonardo Da Vinci.\u201d  Naturally, we all wonder what sort of double-bill it will make with <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00005V5NU\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wilde<\/a><\/i> (1997).<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"8\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">8.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117986070.html?categoryid=13&amp;cs=1&amp;nid=2566\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000727\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Percy Adlon<\/a>, the German director perhaps best known for <i>Out of Rosenheim<\/i> AKA <i>Bagdad Cafe<\/i> (1987), is developing <i>Mahler auf der Couch<\/i>, \u201ca psychological drama about the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler\u2019s life\u201d that will deal with \u201cthe composer\u2019s tumultuous marital life with Alma and his ambivalent relationship with Sigmund Freud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <i>Variety<\/i> article mentions that this story has been told at least once before, in Ken Russell\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0071797\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mahler<\/a><\/i> (1974) \u2014 where the composer was played by Robert Powell, three years before he starred in <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/jesus-of-nazareth-tale-of-two-regions.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jesus of Nazareth<\/a><\/i> (1977), and Alma was played by Georgina Hale.  It was also covered a few years ago in Bruce Beresford\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00005Q2YS\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bride of the Wind<\/a><\/i> (2001), which was mainly about Alma and her lovers; Alma was played by Sarah Wynter, and Gustav, who dies fairly early in the film, was played by Jonathan Pryce.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/09\/yet-another-hurrah-for-sis-sis.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">My sister<\/a> is a huge, huge fan of Gustav Mahler, so I have to keep tabs on this sort of thing.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s tackle these in historical-chronological order! 1.
