1.<\/a> The Associated Press<\/a> says some of the late Charlton Heston<\/a>\u2018s movie memorabilia will be auctioned off<\/a> this summer, including a titular set of \u201cfaux granite tablets\u201d from The Ten Commandments<\/a><\/i> (1956).<\/p>\n

2.<\/a> Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that Danish director Asger Leth<\/a> has signed on to direct Olympia<\/i>, a love story \u201cset against the backdrop of the ancient Olympic Games in Greece as war waged between Athens and Sparta.\u201d The script has gone through drafts by Robert Rodat (1998\u2019s Saving Private Ryan<\/a><\/i>) and Gavin Hood (2005\u2019s Tsotsi<\/a><\/i>).<\/p>\n

3.<\/a> Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that Kevin MacDonald, director of The Last King of Scotland<\/a><\/i> (2006), is attached to direct The Eagle of the Ninth<\/i>, an \u201cepic Roman adventure\u201d based on \u201cRosemary Sutcliffe\u2019s novel<\/a> about a young Roman centurion who travels to Blighty in 135 A.D. to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Rome\u2019s Ninth Legion in Scotland 15 years earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n

4.<\/a> Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that Focus Features has picked up international rights \u2014 which covers all territories except for North America and Spain \u2014 to Alejandro Amenabar\u2019s Agora<\/a><\/i>, which takes place in 4th-century Alexandria. The premise of the film is summed up here as: \u201cTrapped in the Library of Alexandria as religious riots flare on the city\u2019s streets, [the astrologer-philosopher] Hypatia<\/a> battles to save the collected wisdom of the ancient world.\u201d<\/p>\n

5.<\/a> Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that Gale Ann Hurd will produce and Mikael Salomon<\/a> will direct Mortal Armour: The Legend of Galahad<\/a><\/i>, a \u201cperiod romance\u201d about \u201cyoung Galahad\u2019s quest for the Holy Grail.\u201d Salomon is a Danish cinematographer who was Oscar-nominated for his work on The Abyss<\/i> (1989) and Backdraft<\/i> (1991) and then became a director, working mostly in TV; his only theatrical films to date are A Far Off Place<\/a><\/i> (1993) and Hard Rain<\/a><\/i> (1998).<\/p>\n

6.<\/a> Variety<\/a><\/i> and the Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> report that Johanna Wokalek has replaced Franka Potente<\/a> as the title character in Pope Joan<\/a><\/i>, \u201cwhich recounts the ninth-century legend of a woman who disguises herself as a man in order to educate herself and ultimately ascends the papal throne\u201d.<\/p>\n

7.<\/a> Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo and producer Bela Tarr are developing \u201ca film about the 15th century sodomy trial of Italian genius Leonardo Da Vinci.\u201d Naturally, we all wonder what sort of double-bill it will make with Wilde<\/a><\/i> (1997).<\/p>\n

8.<\/a> Variety<\/a><\/i> reports that Percy Adlon<\/a>, the German director perhaps best known for Out of Rosenheim<\/i> AKA Bagdad Cafe<\/i> (1987), is developing Mahler auf der Couch<\/i>, \u201ca psychological drama about the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler\u2019s life\u201d that will deal with \u201cthe composer\u2019s tumultuous marital life with Alma and his ambivalent relationship with Sigmund Freud.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Variety<\/i> article mentions that this story has been told at least once before, in Ken Russell\u2019s Mahler<\/a><\/i> (1974) \u2014 where the composer was played by Robert Powell, three years before he starred in Jesus of Nazareth<\/a><\/i> (1977), and Alma was played by Georgina Hale. It was also covered a few years ago in Bruce Beresford\u2019s Bride of the Wind<\/a><\/i> (2001), which was mainly about Alma and her lovers; Alma was played by Sarah Wynter, and Gustav, who dies fairly early in the film, was played by Jonathan Pryce.<\/p>\n
