Tintin!"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\">A few more items have come up since last night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">1.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/03\/29\/business\/media\/29comics.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The New York Times<\/a><\/i> reports that the heirs of <i>Superman<\/i> co-creator Jerry Siegel were recently granted co-ownership of the character, along with the Time Warner corporation, which owns both DC Comics and the Warner Brothers studio that has been making movies based on the legendary superhero:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The ruling left intact Time Warner\u2019s international rights to the character, which it has long owned through its DC Comics unit.<\/p>\n<p>And it reserved for trial questions over how much the company may owe the Siegel heirs for use of the character since 1999, when their ownership is deemed to have been restored. Also to be resolved is whether the heirs are entitled to payments directly from Time Warner\u2019s film unit, Warner Brothers, which took in $200 million at the domestic box office with \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/07\/superman-atlas-and-all-that-stuff.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Superman Returns<\/a>\u201d in 2006, or only from the DC unit\u2019s Superman profits.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the ruling threatened to complicate Warner\u2019s plans to make more films featuring Superman, including <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/from-superman-returns-to-i-lucifer.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">another sequel<\/a> and a planned movie based on the DC Comics\u2019 \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/newsbites-oscars-trek-narnia-antichrist.html#6\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Justice League of America<\/a>,\u201d in which he joins Batman, Wonder Woman and other superheroes to battle evildoers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com\/federal-judge-rules-against-warners-on-superman-copyright\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nikki Finke<\/a> at Deadline Hollywood Daily gives her two bits, too.  And both sources note that the heirs of <i>Superman<\/i>\u2018s <i>other<\/i> co-creator, Joe Shuster, may be claiming a similar piece of the super-pie in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>MAR 30 UPDATE:  <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117983184.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Variety<\/a><\/i> has an article on this too, now.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">2.<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/news\/local\/wire\/newjersey\/ny-bc-nj--obit-fagles0328mar28,0,3666783.story\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Associated Press<\/a> reports that Robert Fagles, poet and translator of classic Greco-Roman literature, died this week at the age of 74.  I discovered his translation of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0140275363\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Iliad<\/a><\/i> over 15 years ago, when I was thinking of possibly writing a story that combined elements of biblical history and pagan myth; and I read it again a few years later, when I was doing research for a paper on changes in military technique toward the end of the Bronze Age.  I enjoyed Fagles\u2019 style very much, and I always meant to get around to reading his translation of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0143039954\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Odyssey<\/a><\/i>, but I never did (though I <i>have<\/i> read the translations by Robert Fitzgerald and T.E. Lawrence).  Anyway, here\u2019s to Fagles.  (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scriptoriumdaily.com\/2008\/03\/28\/fagles-rest-in-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hat tip<\/a> to John Mark Reynolds at The Scriptorium.)<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">3.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/hr\/content_display\/film\/news\/e3i0253b4ed794b135a4980bb7be375dd49?imw=Y\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/i> says Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer are teaming up to produce a new version of <i>The Lone Ranger<\/i>.  Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio \u2014 whose credits include the modern <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000CRQX2K\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Zorro<\/a><\/i> movies (1998-2005) and the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/06\/pirates-will-be-even-harder-to-follow.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pirates of the Caribbean<\/a><\/i> trilogy (2003-2007), both of which similarly revived \u201cmusty\u201d old genres \u2014 are the writers assigned to this project.  I remember hearing about this almost a year ago when <a href=\"http:\/\/jimhillmedia.com\/blogs\/jim_hill\/archive\/2007\/05\/28\/monday-mouse-watch-will-the-lone-ranger-ride-again-for-walt-disney-pictures-in-2010.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jim Hill<\/a> posted something on this subject, but I don\u2019t seem to have noted it here at the time.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">4.<\/a> <i><a href=\"http:\/\/film.guardian.co.uk\/news\/story\/0,,2268832,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Guardian<\/a><\/i> confirms that <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/newsbites-tintin-expelled-bank-job-etc.html#1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Thomas Sangster<\/a> is playing <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/spielberg-jackson-tintin-trilogy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tintin<\/a> in the trilogy being developed by <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/11\/newsbites-goldfinger-tintin-superman.html#2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Steven Spielberg<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/photorealistic-cartoon-characters-you.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Peter Jackson<\/a>, while <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/12\/he-played-gollum-he-played-king-kong.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Andy Serkis<\/a> is still on board to play Captain Haddock:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Both actors spent a week in Los Angeles before Easter running through scenes for Spielberg and Jackson; work begins in earnest in September, with a view to releasing the first film in 2010.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a name=\"5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">5.<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/popwatch.ew.com\/popwatch\/2008\/03\/calling-the-blu.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Youyoung Lee<\/a> at <i>Entertainment Weekly<\/i> asks if this week\u2019s new gambling movie, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0478087\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">21<\/a><\/i>, is \u201cracist\u201d.  Why?  Because it\u2019s based on a true story about Asian MIT students who used their \u201cnon-white profile\u201d as well as their card-counting skills to get rich in Vegas \u2014 but the movie turns the main characters into white people while relegating a couple of token Asian characters to the margins.  Personally, I don\u2019t think the movie is particularly \u201cracist\u201d \u2014 but it <i>is<\/i> very \u201cconventional\u201d, and even \u201cconservatively\u201d so.  <i>21<\/i> is just the latest in a long, long, long line of movies that take an interesting true-life story and then change it so that the resulting film is just like every other movie that\u2019s already out there.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few more items have come up since last night. 1.
