The gist of it is that the franchise needs the overseas market to stay afloat, but the distributors who bought the overseas rights to the first film might have dibs on the sequels, too \u2014 and Warner doesn\u2019t want to distribute <i>any<\/i> movies, but especially these ones, through any distributor other than Warner\u2019s own overseas branches.  The story doesn\u2019t address whether, let alone how, the fate of this franchise might be affected by Warner\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/03\/harry-potter-seven-books-eight-movies.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">recent decision<\/a> to add an extra movie to the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/harry-potter-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Harry Potter<\/a><\/i> franchise or by the two-part adaptation of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/01\/inklings-article-archive.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Hobbit<\/a><\/i> that may or may not <a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/new-difficulties-for-new-line-and.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">get made<\/a>; between those two franchises alone, Warner would be churning out five new big-budget fantasy flicks over the next four and a half years, and might not be interested in putting up the cash for even <i>more<\/i> high-priced effects-laden tentpoles \u2014 especially when the original film in this particular franchise was an iffier box-office performer than expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Variety has yet another story on The Golden Compass and the question of whether Warner Brothers will go ahead with the rest of the His Dark Materials franchise, which began under the now-defunct team at New Line.
