{"id":998,"date":"2008-03-03T21:16:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-03T21:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2008\/03\/its-official-steve-mcqueen-was-a-teleporter\/"},"modified":"2008-03-03T21:16:00","modified_gmt":"2008-03-03T21:16:00","slug":"its-official-steve-mcqueen-was-a-teleporter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/filmchat\/2008\/03\/its-official-steve-mcqueen-was-a-teleporter.html","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s official: Steve McQueen was a teleporter."},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><span style=\"font-family: georgia\"><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2006\/08\/before-car-chases-in-ronin-there-was.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Two years ago<\/a>, I linked to a website \u2014 no longer working, alas \u2014 which showed a high-speed drive through Paris from two parallel points of view: one, the short film <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000CFL6DS\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">C\u2019\u00e9tait un rendez-vous<\/a><\/i> (1976), shot from within the speeding vehicle itself; and two, a growing line on a Google Map.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now, I link to something more complicated in concept but simpler in execution.  <a href=\"http:\/\/rjsmith.com\/bullitt-locations.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">This site<\/a> has tracked down all the places in San Francisco where the famous car chase from <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0008ENHTE\/petertchatta\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bullitt<\/a><\/i> (1968) was shot, and <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;z=12&amp;ll=37.767458,-122.434387&amp;spn=0.201648,0.31311&amp;t=k&amp;om=1&amp;msid=103238008197352917460.0000011225910ccedea11&amp;msa=0\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">this site<\/a> highlights all those locations on a Google Maps satellite image, like so:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_MwnH1kpbPRM\/R8zg9TDt2TI\/AAAAAAAABKg\/64MMZzPc2GU\/s1600-h\/bullitt-googlemap2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"cursor:pointer;cursor:hand\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_MwnH1kpbPRM\/R8zg9TDt2TI\/AAAAAAAABKg\/64MMZzPc2GU\/s400\/bullitt-googlemap2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It would seem the cars magically hopped all over the city in mid-chase.  But this is nothing new, of course; the Thom Anderson documentary <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/06\/vancouver-plays-itself.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Los Angeles Plays Itself<\/a><\/i> (2003) highlights a number of cases where films made and set in L.A. have thrown geographical specificity to the winds, and I remember getting a kick out of the bizarre path taken during a sort-of chase sequence in Ice Cube\u2019s <i><a href=\"http:\/\/filmchatblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/12\/theyve-got-legs.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Are We There Yet?<\/a><\/i> (2005), which begins on the Canadian border and continues all over downtown Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, it\u2019s fun to have all the real-life locations mapped out like this.
