Guess what? I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.<\/strong> Bruce Dickinson<\/p>\n

This evening the Providence College Friars men\u2019s hockey team plays in the semifinals of their league\u2019s playoffs, hopefully yet another successful step in their defense of the national championship that they unexpectedly won last spring.<\/p>\n

We Are the Champions!<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
<\/iframe><\/p>\nAlthough basketball still trumps hockey on my list of sports preferences, I bought a hockey season ticket this year for the first time. The Friars were 16-1-2 at home this season; the only game they lost at home was the one I was unable to attend. That should tell you something about the power of a fanatic fan.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/766\/2016\/03\/one-leg-at-a-time.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8498\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8498\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/766\/2016\/03\/one-leg-at-a-time.jpg\" alt=\"one leg at a time\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\"><\/a>Last weekend the Friars played a best-of-three playoff series at home against Merrimack College, a series in which they were strongly favored since the Friars were the two-seed in the tournament and the Merrimack a mere six-seed. Season ticket fans were informed via email that the first 1000 fans at the Friday night game would receive a free cowbell. I wanted a cowbell, of course\u2014I\u2019m one of those millions of people who cannot hear the word \u201ccowbell\u201d without remembering one of the greatest skits ever from Saturday Night Live, where the<\/em> Bruce Dickinson (played by Christopher Walken)\u2014who says that \u201cI put my pants on just like the rest of you\u2013one leg at \u00a0time. Except once my pants are on, I make gold records\u201d\u2014guides the iconic rock band Blue Oyster Cult as they record their mega-hit \u201cDon\u2019t Fear the Reaper.\u201d<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/55624839\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/vimeo.com\/55624839<\/a><\/p>\nBut as fate would have it, the Friday night hockey game was at the exact same time as the Friars basketball team\u2019s game against Villanova in the Big East tournament semifinals in NYC. Thanks to living only five or six blocks from our on-campus hockey arena, I was able to catch the final period of the game after watching the basketball team lose a tough one. It\u2019s a good thing I went to the hockey game, because the team needed me. I arrived just a few minutes into the third and final period with the score tied 1-1.<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/766\/2016\/03\/cowbell-fever.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8499\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8499\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/766\/2016\/03\/cowbell-fever-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"cowbell fever\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\"><\/a><\/p>\nMoving to my usual seat just a couple of sections down from the section occupied by the inordinately loud and obnoxious Merrimack students and band, I had just settled in when, during a time out, there on the Jumbotron was a brief clip from the SNL skit\u2014Christopher Walken insisting to the band that despite Will Farrell\u2019s best efforts to drown out the rest of the group with his cowbell playing, it isn\u2019t\u00a0enough. \u201cGuess what?\u201d Walken says\u2014\u201cI got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell<\/strong>!\u201d The crowd went wild as they shook their tiny cowbells, which unfortunately were too small to drown out the \u201cLet\u2019s Go Merrimack!\u201d cheer coming from enemy territory. But shortly after the time out one of our Friar freshmen scored on a beautiful shot between the goalie\u2019s glove and the post and we were on our way to victory. The father of one of the Friar senior defensemen ran in front of the Merrimack section with his best Will Farrell imitation as he banged on a real<\/strong> cowbell with a drum stick and the crowd went wild. Add an empty netter in the last minute, and we won 3-1.<a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/766\/2016\/03\/cow-cowbell.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8500\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8500 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/766\/2016\/03\/cow-cowbell-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"cow cowbell\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/a><\/p>\nThe \u201cmore cowbell!\u2019 meme went viral shortly after the SNL skit first played in April 2000. In a 2007 interview, Christopher Walken reported that after ordering a salad for lunch at a Singapore restaurant, the waiter delivered the salad and said \u201cYou know what this salad needs? More cowbell!\u201d Whenever some important ingredient is missing but you don\u2019t know what it is, you need more cowbell. Having a bad day at work? You need more cowbell. Stuck in bumper to bumper traffic? Gotta have more cowbell. Your kids are on drugs and your spouse just walked out? You need more cowbell. It\u2019s pretty small and not very loud, but it\u2019s more cowbell than I used to have. My being in attendance helped once again\u2014a late third period goal and an empty netter sent the Friars to the semis with a 2-0 victory. I will have my cowbell in hand this evening as I watch the Friars play for a spot in the league championship game. Because guess what? I have a fever, and the only prescription is another Providence Friars hockey national championship!
