A certain movie\u00a0 caused a little scandal at our church several years ago.\u00a0 No, it wasn\u2019t racy or lewd or political, it was\u2026\u00a0 well, it was about Arthur \u201cKiller\u201d Kane, bass player for the New York Dolls.\u00a0 The New York Dolls are a rock band, formed in 1971, and influence much of what we know as punk rock, including the Ramones<\/a>, Blondie<\/a>, Television<\/a> and Talking Heads<\/a>.\u00a0 Their story is like any you\u2019ve seen on VH1\u2019s Behind the Music, because \u2013 like many bands \u2014 their trajectory could also be titled, \u201cHow Not To Survive Fame.\u201d \u00a0In fact, their original drummer didn\u2019t outlast the group\u2019s first British tour, the next one died of drug abuse, and their founding guitarist died of drug excess.\u00a0 Lead singer David Johansen came out best, by transforming himself into Buster Poindexter (who sang \u201dHot Hot Hot\u201d), and starring in \u201dScrooged\u201d with Bill Murray.<\/p>\n

Kane, however, the subject of the movie, fell from the third floor of a building.<\/p>\n

The movie begins with Kane as 55 year old, has-been rock star in California. While he was recovering from his fall, however, he encountered two Mormon missionaries and converted to the faith.\u00a0 Yes, Arthur \u201cKiller\u201d Kane became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and ended up working in one of the church\u2019s genealogy libraries \u2013 the Family History Center in Los Angeles. Kane\u2019s transformation is emotionally jolting. In one frame he\u2019s a trashy cross dressing punk glam rocker, in the next he\u2019s a librarian in a short sleeved 60\/40 blend button up.<\/p>\n

When Kane gets the chance for a reunion with the remaining members of the band \u2013 something he\u2019d dreamt of doing for years \u2013 he\u2019s both thrilled at the opportunity and terrified of facing his past.\u00a0 After 30 years, he packs his bags and heads off to be a part of the 2004 Meltdown Festival in London.<\/p>\n

After he leaves, one of his fellow Mormon librarians says, \u201dI can\u2019t believe I know a rock star.\u201d<\/p>\n

The movie is not about Mormonism, though the faith element of Kane\u2019s life caused many conversations among us at church. In fact, the film doesn\u2019t play up Mormonism, nor does it treat the faith ironically.<\/p>\n

A movie that involves Mormonism that isn\u2019t hysterical or preachy?\u00a0 Yeah, that happened.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The filmmaker pulls off the unthinkable \u2013 he just tells a story.\u00a0 This results in a touching, poignant, hilarious, gut punch of a film. \u00a0The film debuted in 2005, before Gov. Romney surged to the top of the GOP ticket, but is being re-released (with a few added extras) through a new online tool called PUMit.<\/p>\n
