7 Quick Takes Friday (Oops…I mean Sunday)

Hello All — I meant to do this Friday, but had to flee my home because the AC broke and it’s been in the mid-90’s. So away we went to the in-laws, where it’s nice and quiet, and the AC works. 🙂

1. Agatha Christie — well, she’s wonderful. Any mystery you’ve read written after 1950 has probably stolen several of it’s plot dimensions from Dame Christie’s prodigious works. I just finished “The Mysterious Affair At Styles”, which was her first published mystery. 

If you’re like me, and you love a good mystery, but you hate horrible mangling of the English language and cheesy sex plots, then the one-the only, Dame Agatha is for you! 🙂

Some recommendations: 

– The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, published in 1926

– And Then There Were None, published in 1939

– The Body in the Library, published in 1942

2. We are getting a dog… eventually. By the end of the summer. Either from the Humane Society or some other kind of rescue. Anyone have any tips or warnings about particular breeds? We don’t have any children (yet!) but, we’re working on it. 😉 So we need something that will be good with young kids. Ladies, please let me know your thoughts! 

3. We have found a parish in Indianapolis. It’s Holy Rosary parish. They have a wonderful liturgy there and a newly restored and functioning (!) communion rail. Needless to say, we are excited. 🙂 

The english novus ordo Mass is at noon, which also fits our lazy summer lifestyle quite nicely. 

Tomorrow night (and for the next several weeks) there is a seminar on Theology of the Body that we are attending. I’m really excited to learn more about this really revolutionary teaching of John Paul II. I have done some limited reading, and we learned a little bit about it in NFP classes, but it will be wonderful to really spend some time knowing more and trying to understand it more deeply. Also, it will be a great way (hopefully!) to meet some other like-minded Catholics in Indianapolis. 

Here’s hoping I’ll be filled to the brim tomorrow night and all my dear readers will be regaled with tales of my ignorance. 🙂

4. I just finished a wonderful book for my thesis. It is called “The Cost of Choice: Women Evaluate the Impact of Abortion” — edited by Erika Bachiochi and with contributions from women such as Dr. Mary Ann Glendon, Elizabeth Fox-Genovese, and Elizabeth Schlitz. 

It talks about abortion from the perspectives of culture, history, medicine and law, and shows how women have been deeply impacted by 36 years of legalized abortion in the US. Although the authors are all top-rated women in their respective fields, and the book is ultimately academic, the essays are all very accessible and thoughtful.

5. Tonight I made spinach and mushroom quesadillas on whole wheat tortillas as a recipe found in the “Good Carb Cookbook” — a book about what Glycemic Index is and why eating foods that are overall low GI is best for your health. It’s a particularly good way of watching carbs for someone like me, who is diabetic. 

Fresh spinach and mushrooms, garlic, olive oil, and whole wheat tortillas which have fewer carbs and more fiber than their traditional flour counterparts. 

So yummy. 

6. On July 3, husband and I will be married for SIX months! Woah. That went by fast. 

I need a good idea for a gift or some kind of sweet surprise. We’re trying to be thrifty (Don’t you know there’s a recession on?), but I want to do something special. 

Any good ideas from you thrifty, crafty, wonderfully creative women out there?
