Now that the rest of the world knows who Benedict Cumberbatch is, we can get back to the real reason the man exists \u2014 to play great characters. \u00a0The star of BBC\u2019s outstandingly powerful \u201cSherlock\u201d, Great Britain\u2019s take on the Sherlock Holmes character, Cumberbatch has co-starred with Johnny Lee Miller, star of the CBS drama \u201cElementary\u201d, USA\u2019s desperate attempt to create a Shelock Holmes series that doesn\u2019t look like a CSI knockoff, in a stage production of \u201cFrankenstein\u201d.<\/p>\n

The play, adapted by Nick Dear and directed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle, premiered in 2011 at the National Theater in London, and a live broadcast is showing in encore performances in theaters throughout the UK and in select U.S. cities on October 31st, 2013.<\/p>\n

$\"\"$ <\/a>The production is unique in that both leads played Victor Frankenstein and The Creature. \u00a0Which lead played which role depended on the production date. \u00a0Had I known about this production when it happened, I would have dragged my wife to The Tivoli in St. Louis to see the initial live broadcast.<\/p>\n

The cinema broadcasts are relatively new for the National Theater, and their list of productions for this year include \u201cMacbeth\u201d starring Kenneth Branaugh, \u201cOthello\u201d starring Adrian Lester and Rory Kinnear (\u201cSkyfall\u201d), and \u201cCoriolanus\u201d starring Tom Hiddleston (\u201cThor\u201d, \u201cThe Avengers\u201d). \u00a0Check their website at\u00a0 http:\/\/ntlive.nationaltheatre.org.uk<\/a>\u00a0to see if the cinema broadcasts will be coming to a theater in your area.<\/p>\n

Regarding the television shows these two actor are involved in, \u201cElementary\u201d has cast Rhys Ifans in the role of Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock\u2019s older brother, and Sean Pertwee (Event Horizon, Equilibrium<\/em>) in the role of Inspector Lestrade. \u00a0Looks like CBS is confident in the strides \u201cElementary\u201d has made over the previous season and has invested in the canon.<\/p>\n

Season 3 of \u201cSherlock\u201d will premier on BBC in October 2013, with broadcasts on PBS\u2019 \u201cMasterpiece\u201d program in 2014. \u00a0Also, director Guillermo del Toro has revealed that he is considering Cumberbatch to star in his upcoming adaptation of\u2026 \u00a0\u2026care to take a guess? \u00a0Mary Shelley\u2019s\u00a0Frankenstein.\u00a0<\/em> The two are already planning on working together for del Toro\u2019s next horror project\u00a0Crimson Peak,<\/em> and with\u00a0Pacific Rim<\/em> set to premier this weekend, we\u2019ll see how much clout del Toro will have once the figures come in. \u00a0Will the crowds come out for it, or flock again to\u00a0Despicable Me 2<\/em>? \u00a0My hope is the former, as I would love to see more of Cumberbatch in pretty much anything.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
