From Geek Goes Rogue TV Editor Zach Lorton, who still thought\u00a0<\/em>Dragonheart was a pretty decent film:<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAll right, you primitive screwheads, listen up.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are certain television shows that I stumble upon as they premier, and I enjoy way more than anyone else \u2014 \u201cFlashForward\u201d was a prime example. \u00a0Then there are those series that I just can\u2019t get into. \u00a0I saw a few episodes of \u201cLost\u201d, but it didn\u2019t take. \u00a0I saw the first episode of \u201cGlee\u201d, said \u201cI get it,\u201d yet immediately knew I would never have to watch another episode.\u00a0 Then there are other series that I discover after everyone else.\u00a0 For instance, I never saw the reboot of \u201cBattlestar Galactica\u201d until earlier this year (for the record, it was one of the best series ever broadcast in the history of television, science fiction or not). \u00a0And I actually saw\u00a0Serenity<\/em>\u00a0before I ever watched a single episode of \u201cFirefly\u201d.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t have cable until a few years ago.\u00a0 I don\u2019t subscribe to HBO or Showtime. \u00a0I don\u2019t have a subscription to Hulu Plus, Netflix, or Redbox.\u00a0 And there aren\u2019t many series that I\u2019ll buy or rent on DVD unless I know how compelling they are.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

So\u2026 \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always loved the King Arthur legend and stories that take place during medieval times. \u00a0There\u2019s a draw to the stories of nobility, courage, bravery and savagery, especially for men. \u00a0They\u2019re compelling to the point of wistfulness. But television could never capture the feel of the time nearly as realistically as film did. \u00a0For me and my friends, the wonderful nerds who listened to music filled with references of the time, many of whom played tabletop RPGs and read countless fantasy novels, the only place we could find that kind of quality was in the movies.<\/p>\n

Until recently, everything I\u2019ve heard about \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d was incidental \u2014 the violence, the nudity, Peter Dinklage. \u00a0I haven\u2019t heard much about its starkness, its beauty, its pacing, or its production values.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

A few days ago, I watched the first episode of the series online, and wow, what a beautiful show.\u00a0 Seriously, that\u2019s the one word that kept coming up with every new scene: \u201cBeautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t this what television is supposed to do \u2014 fill us with awe through spectacle?\u00a0 Dazzle our eyes and our senses?\u00a0 It\u2019s a fact that we are drawn to that which is pleasing to the eye, and beauty holds our attention more than almost anything else.\u00a0 Consider the visuals in otherwise lacking television and movies:<\/p>\n

The world of Pandora in\u00a0Avatar\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The world of The Grid in\u00a0Tron: Legacy<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2026and its superior counterpart, \u201cTron: Uprising\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And every once in a while, SyFy fails to disappoint.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And from what I can gather after having seen only one episode, I completely understand the draw. \u00a0One gets the sense there is more beyond the initial story, and things can only get more and more complicated as the series progresses. \u00a0But aside from the spectacle, one thing stands out as the high point of quality that all television must aspire to \u2014 human interaction.<\/p>\n

Like \u201cBattlestar Galactica\u201d, this is a human drama. \u00a0The interplay among characters is filled with all things that make us human \u2014 rage, fear, lust, hope, loyalty, betrayal.\u00a0 For this reason above all others, \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d succeeds in ways that lesser series do not. \u00a0We feel the struggles of the characters, their desires, insecurities, and needs, and even through we live in different times, even different worlds, we can see how the events might play out in our own lives.<\/p>\n

Is this what makes television so magnetic? \u00a0Does great escapism reflect our realism, or does realism give our escapism the power it needs to draw us in?<\/p>\n

One thing\u2019s for sure \u2014 I\u2019ll be watching more of \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d. \u00a0No spoilers, please.<\/p>\n
