I continue my custom of offering you a Christmas poem, poetry being \u201ca trap for meditation.\u201d\u00a0 Here is one that I just discovered by the Welsh Anglican cleric Rowland Watkyns (1662):<\/p>\n

Upon Christ\u2019s Nativity, or Christmas<\/strong><\/p>\n

From three dark places Christ came forth this day;<\/p>\n

From first His Father\u2019s bosom, where He lay,<\/p>\n

Concealed till now; then from the typic law,<\/p>\n

Where we His manhood but by figures saw;<\/p>\n

And lastly from His mother\u2019s womb He came<\/p>\n

To us, a perfect God and perfect Man.<\/p>\n

Now in a manger lies the eternal Word:<\/p>\n

The Word He is, yet can no speech afford;<\/p>\n

He is the Bread of Life, yet hungry lies;<\/p>\n

The Living Fountain, yet for drink He cries;<\/p>\n

He cannot help or clothe Himself at need<\/p>\n

Who did the lilies clothe and ravens feed;<\/p>\n

He is the Light of Lights, yet now doth shroud<\/p>\n

His glory with our nature as a cloud.<\/p>\n

He came to us a Little One, that we<\/p>\n

\nLike little children might in malice be;\n

Little He is, and wrapped in clouts, lest He<\/p>\n

Might strike us dead if clothed with majesty.<\/p>\n

Christ had four beds and those not soft nor brave:<\/p>\n

The Virgin\u2019s womb, the manger, cross, and grave.<\/p>\n

The angels sing this day, and so will I<\/p>\n

That have more reason to be glad than they.<\/p>\n
