It was a re-run. We\u2019ve seen it before. You might as well have watched it on a black-and-white TV.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If only it were!\u00a0 That was the last time anything was consistently good on television.\u00a0 That was the golden age of TV, the era of Jack Benny, Gracie Allen, Rod Serling, Edward R. Murrow.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 Eisenhower administration!\u00a0 The early Elvis!\u00a0 Intact families!\u00a0 Route 66!<\/p>\n<p>I guess the dividing line would be one\u2019s attitude to the counter culture beginning in the late 1960s.\u00a0 Liberals would generally favor that, I suppose, with Conservatives bemoaning the changes (e.g., the sexual revolution).<\/p>\n<p>Though the era of black-and-white TV was a vibrant, creative, and positive time culturally for America, it was no utopia, with real problems.\u00a0 For example, the institutionalized racism of the Jim Crow laws.\u00a0 But compare the early Civil Rights protesters\u2013moral, religious, dignified\u2013with today\u2019s Occupy Wall Street protesters (unfocused, hedonistic, squalid).\u00a0 And, if you want counter culture, surely the Beatniks, reading existentialist philosophy and listening to jazz, were cooler than the Hippies, tripped out on acid and wearing flowers in their hair.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\nI wonder if we could date our cultural collapse from the advent of color television.\u00a0 (The first all-color lineup was in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Color_television\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">1966<\/a>, which would be about right.)\n<p>via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/politico44\/2012\/09\/obama-rnc-fare-for-blackandwhite-tv-134057.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Obama: RNC fare for \u2018black-and-white TV\u2019 \u2013 POLITICO.com<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Obama dismissed the Republican convention in these terms: \u201cDespite all the challenges that we face \u2026 what they offered over those three days was more often than not an agenda that was better suited for the last century.
