{"id":12894,"date":"2012-10-15T05:45:16","date_gmt":"2012-10-15T09:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geneveith.com\/?p=12894"},"modified":"2012-10-15T05:45:16","modified_gmt":"2012-10-15T09:45:16","slug":"the-winner-of-the-nobel-peace-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2012\/10\/the-winner-of-the-nobel-peace-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>I would like to congratulate the 500 million citizens of the European Union for winning this year\u2019s Nobel Peace Prize.\u00a0 The same people who awarded one of the world\u2019s greatest honors to Barack Obama upon entering office\u2013before his Afghanistan escalation and his drone assassinations\u2013this time gave the prize to a whole country.\u00a0 Or, perhaps better, to a whole alliance of different countries.\u00a0 Even though the union isn\u2019t doing so well right now, what with the economic crisis and the common currency in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p>If the Norwegian committee that made this decision wanted to honor the European Union as a major achievement in world peace, why wouldn\u2019t it instead honor the people who first had the idea or who implemented the alliance?\u00a0 I dislike collective entities winning prizes like this, including when Time Magazine gives its \u201cPerson of the Year\u201d award to abstractions and non-persons.\u00a0 But if Norway (which is not even a member of the European Union) wants to award the $1.5 million prize in this way, that\u2019s fine.\u00a0\u00a0 But that means the public could offer new kinds of nominees.\u00a0\u00a0 For next year, I nominate the following:<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<blockquote><p>(1)\u00a0 The world\u2019s beaches (for making possible so many peaceful vacations)<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0 The pharmaceutical industry (for inventing tranquilizers)<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0 The United States of America (for its role in World Wars I, II, &amp; the Cold War)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Any other nominees?\u00a0 How about for the other prizes\u2013economics, medicine, literature, etc.\u2013which have arguably gone to individuals for far too long?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/13\/world\/nobel-peace-prize.html?pagewanted=all\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to European Union \u2013 NYTimes.com<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I would like to congratulate the 500 million citizens of the European Union for winning this year\u2019s Nobel Peace Prize.\u00a0 The same people who awarded one of the world\u2019s greatest honors to Barack Obama upon entering office\u2013before his Afghanistan escalation and his drone assassinations\u2013this time gave the prize to a whole country.\u00a0 Or, perhaps better, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1281,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[1591],"class_list":["post-12894","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-international","tag-nobel-peace-prize"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
