Mitt Romney, as expected, seems to be tacking towards the center in an effort to woo Independents and to counter the \u201cwar against women\u201d allegations.\u00a0 This is what he told the Des Moines Register<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no legislation with regards to abortion that I\u2019m familiar with that would become part of my agenda.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Among his long history of different opinions on life issues, Romney\u2019s stated position today is that he is pro-life with exceptions (for rape, incest, and the life of the mother).\u00a0 Does this sound like he is saying, yes, I\u2019m mostly pro-life, but if I\u2019m elected, don\u2019t worry, I\u2019m not going to do anything about it?<\/p>\n

How should pro-life voters take this?\u00a0 A Romney administration, however unenthusiastic about the issue,\u00a0 would surely be better for the\u00a0 pro-life cause than Obama\u2019s.\u00a0 He says he\u2019ll end the Obamacare abortifacient mandate, cut funding for Planned Parenthood, and stop tax money from going to international abortion providers.\u00a0 He also says he will appoint conservative judges.\u00a0 After all, given Roe vs. Wade, abortion law is in the hands of the courts rather than\u00a0 legislators.<\/p>\n

\nIn addition to those pro-abortion measures implemented by the Obama administration, the Democrats in their convention came across as not just pro-choice but as positively pro-abortion.\u00a0 Bill Clinton\u2019s Democratic party wanted abortion to be \u201csafe, legal, and rare.\u201d\u00a0 But at this convention, speaker after speaker displayed,\u00a0 to thunderous applause, an untroubled, fanatical, and outright evil embrace of abortion.\n

But still. . . .Though Romney is now trying to placate pro-lifers<\/a>, they should be excused for being cynical, for thinking Republicans once again are trying to use them for their votes and activism, while giving them as little as possible.<\/p>\n

Is this too harsh an assessment?\u00a0 If you are pro-life, do Romney\u2019s words make you reconsider supporting him?\u00a0 Do pro-lifers have any other options?<\/p>\n
