A movie entitled The Son of God<\/em> will be released February 28.\u00a0 An expanded version of material from the Bible<\/em> TV ministeries but released from a major studio (20th Century Fox), it will keep in the miracles, unlike some film renditions of Jesus\u2019 story.\u00a0 Details from Variety<\/em> after the jump.\u00a0 Here is the trailer.\u00a0 (But does it look good?\u00a0 Is it really helpful to turn material from the Word of God into the visual medium of film?)<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\nFrom <a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2013\/film\/news\/fox-to-distribute-son-of-god-feature-from-bible-pair-1200608999\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u2018The Bible\u2019 Producers Resurrect Jesus for Expanded \u2018Son of God\u2019 Film (EXCLUSIVE) | Variety<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have struck a distribution pact with 20th Century Fox for a feature film, \u201cSon of God,\u201d derived from the pair\u2019s 10-hour miniseries \u201cThe Bible.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\nPic will focus on the story of Jesus, played by Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado, from his birth through the Resurrection. The movie is distilled from the Emmy-nominated mini that aired in March on History and augmented with scenes not featured in the telecast. \u201cBible\u201d aired in the U.S. to an average of 15 million-plus viewers for its five two-hour installments; it\u2019s now rolling out to big auds in overseas markets.<\/p>\nThe studio is still working out a release date for next year. [It will be February 28, 2014.]\u00a0 The sides are also hammering out the international distrib components of the pact.<\/p>\nFox sees the project as a chance to nab a proven property that will be a big draw with faith-motivated auds but also has the ability to pull in other adult demos. The studio was the natural home for \u201cSon of God\u201d as Fox Home Entertainment is already handling the homevid distribution of the miniseries. \u201cBible\u201d has moved more than 1 million units since its April release and ranks as the top-selling TV-to-disc title of the past two years, per Fox.<\/p>\n\u201cWe\u2019ve had the good fortune to work with (Fox topper) Jim Gianopulos and his team for the past year on \u2018The Bible\u2019 (homevid),\u201d said Burnett. \u201cWhile we appreciated the interest from other distributors, Fox was the right choice for us. This movie deserves a big studio behind it. We have crafted a powerful standalone movie that is a completely emotional, uplifting experience for audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cSon of God\u201d runs two hours and 15 minutes and is a complete re-edit of the Jesus storyline from the mini. Fox Home Entertainment will also distrib a homevid release of the film edit.<\/p>\nThe notion of pulling a theatrical release out of a miniseries is a characteristically convention-defying move from Burnett, the mastermind of \u201cThe Voice,\u201d \u201cSurvivor,\u201d \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d and other unscripted primetime hits. Burnett and Downey own \u201cBible\u201d franchise outright, having secured independent financing through their Lightworkers Media banner for the production of the miniseries. Early on the pair had the idea that a feature film focused on the Jesus story could be culled from the larger story arc of the mini.<\/p>\nBurnett and Downey tapped former Fox and Revolution Studios exec Tom Sherak to help broker the feature distribution deal. There were multiple suitors for \u201cSon of God\u201d that offered bids during the past few weeks. The Fox agreement was set Wednesday evening by Sherak, Brian Edwards, COO of Burnett\u2019s One Three Media banner, and Gianopulos.<\/p>\nThe film release promises to add another large dimension to a project that has been embraced by a range of faith leaders \u2014 whose endorsements undoubtedly helped boost viewership for the mini. \u201cSon of God\u201d has clear potential to reach the kind of auds that rarely hit the multiplexes for other Hollywood fare. But the miniseries\u2019 ratings proved that it also had mainstream appeal.<\/p>\n\u201cBible\u201d has been a four-year odyssey for Burnett and Downey. The married couple spearheaded the writing and production of the mini, most of which was shot on location in Morocco.
