{"id":18155,"date":"2014-03-05T05:55:33","date_gmt":"2014-03-05T10:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=18155"},"modified":"2014-03-04T18:36:50","modified_gmt":"2014-03-04T23:36:50","slug":"the-german-homeschooling-family-can-stay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2014\/03\/the-german-homeschooling-family-can-stay\/","title":{"rendered":"The German homeschooling family can stay!"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The Supreme Court turned down the appeal of the Romeikes, that German\u00a0 family who sought asylum in the United States after the German government threatened to take their children because they were homeschooling them.<\/p>\n<p>But despite the family losing what seemed to be their final hope, the Department of Homeland Security suddenly announced that the Romeikes would be given \u201cindefinite deferred status,\u201d which means that they can stay in the United States after all!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/gleanings\/2014\/march\/romeikes-can-stay-good-news-for-german-home-schooling-famil.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u2018The Romeikes Can Stay\u2019: Good News for German Home-Schooling Family Denied Asylum | Gleanings | ChristianityToday.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a dramatic 24-hour turnaround, the German family that could have faced deportation after the Supreme Court didn\u2019t take their case has been granted \u201cindefinite deferred status\u201d by the Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not entirely sure what it all means, but it\u2019s definitely good,\u201d Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) attorney Jim Mason told CT. \u201cIt permits them to stay in the country and work here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t answer the fundamental question raised by the Romeike family\u2019s unusual asylum case that has pushed persecution boundaries: Is homeschooling a human right?<\/p>\n<p>While the family\u2019s immigration judge said the German government was frustrating the family\u2019s faith by its refusal to let them home school, he was the only judge to rule that way.
