{"id":18449,"date":"2014-04-08T06:00:50","date_gmt":"2014-04-08T10:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=18449"},"modified":"2014-04-08T09:41:53","modified_gmt":"2014-04-08T13:41:53","slug":"george-herbert-on-sin-love-the-sacrament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2014\/04\/george-herbert-on-sin-love-the-sacrament\/","title":{"rendered":"George Herbert on Sin, Love, &#038; the Sacrament"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2014\/03\/how-george-herberts-poetry-converted-an-atheist\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Miranda Threlfall-Holmes<\/a> discusses one of my favorite poems, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ritchies.net\/Herbert\/poems\/031_The_Agony.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Agony <\/a>by George Herbert.\u00a0 It is about how we try to measure everything, neglecting what cannot be measured; namely, sin and love.\u00a0 But these can be known in their depths as they come together in the Cross of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 The poem concludes with these lines on the Sacrament:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Love is that liquor sweet and most divine<\/p>\n<p>Which my God feels as blood; but I, as wine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/belief\/2014\/feb\/24\/george-herbert-poetry-theology-images\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">How can we measure the immeasurable? | Miranda Threlfall-Holmes | Comment is free | theguardian.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>In typical 17th-century metaphysical style, Herbert\u2019s poem <em>The Agony<\/em> begins with a sweeping and grand survey of the state of human knowledge:<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<blockquote><p>Philosophers have measur\u2019d mountains<\/p>\n<p>Fathom\u2019d the depths of seas, of states, and kings<\/p>\n<p>Walk\u2019d with a staff to heav\u2019n, and traced fountains.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The effect is to paint an impressive still life, full of globes and maps and sextants, crowns and armies, books and telescopes. Geography, mathematics, astronomy, political science: the educated elite of the 17th century were justly proud of their state of knowledge, and of the speed at which it was growing. This was a time when the known world was rapidly expanding into the New World, great advances were being made in navigation and associated sciences, and the study of political theory was in ferment. The sense of pride and awe and intellectual excitement of all this is palpable.<\/p>\n<p>It is still remarkably fresh today, as science strains towards a Grand Unifying Theory of Everything. A modern poet might similarly summarise the state of contemporary science and humanities: we have measured virtually everything there is to be measured. . . .<\/p>\n<p>But the question of what can\u2019t be measured remains. How are we to value things for which science is yet to devise a metric? How are we to assess things that it is theoretically impossible to measure? . . . .<\/p>\n<p>Herbert suggests two \u201cvast spacious things\u201d which few experts attempt to \u201csound\u201d (get to the bottom of, as with measuring the depths of the sea): sin, and love. . . .<\/p>\n<p>Here the action cuts from a carefully arranged academic still life, to an equally familiar but graphically contrasting crucifixion scene. It is a grisly one. From standing in a museum, we are suddenly confronted with:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A man so wrung with pains that all his hair<\/p>\n<p>His skin, his garments bloody be.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just as we are staring in shock at the abrupt change of focus, the poem drags us back to the academic question. How can one plumb the depths of sin? The question could easily be one of angels dancing on the head of a pin, but Herbert answers it not with theology, but with another arresting image:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sin is that press and vice, which forceth pain<\/p>\n<p>To hunt his cruel food through ev\u2019ry vein.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then the scene shifts again \u2013 as in a dream, or nightmare, we are no longer looking at the scene from the outside, but are suddenly a participant in it. To measure love, we are told, to \u201cassay\u201d (again, a carefully chosen scientific term) the blood that flows from the dead man\u2019s side. As we are recoiling in horror from this thought, it becomes even more graphic \u2013 we are asked how it tastes. In the final couplet, Herbert draws us back into the present by making the link with the wine at communion explicit:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Love is that liquor sweet and most divine<\/p>\n<p>Which my God feels as blood; but I, as wine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How can we measure the immeasurable? We can\u2019t. The stock in trade questions of academic theology \u2013 what is sin, what is love, what did Jesus\u2019 death accomplish \u2013 are not answered. We are simply presented with the image of Christ on the cross. And in doing so, Herbert is of course at his most profoundly theological. The poem\u2019s construction itself communicates the fundamental Christian doctrine that God\u2019s answer to all our questions is not words or theories, but to become incarnate as a human being and simply say: I am.
