Most arguments for abortion have treated it as a tragic but sometimes necessary choice, something regrettable.\u00a0 The goal should be to make abortion \u201csafe, legal,\u201d but also \u201crare.\u201d\u00a0 But tolerating a morally questionable practice is no longer enough; now that practice must also be affirmed as good.\u00a0 A new book, Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights<\/em> by Katha Pollitt, argues that we need to start thinking of abortion as something that is morally good, just as good as letting the child be born.<\/p>\n

It is long past time, Pollitt argues, for abortion to be cast as a social good. \u201cWe need to see abortion as an urgent practical decision that is just as moral as the decision to have a child \u2014 indeed, sometimes more moral,\u201d she writes. \u201cAbortion is part of being a mother and of caring for children, because part of caring for children is knowing when it\u2019s not a good idea to bring them into the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
