But what the parents saw as a moment of independence for their 10-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, they say authorities viewed much differently.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle and Alexander Meitiv say they are being investigated for neglect for the Dec. 20 trek \u2014 in a case they say reflects a clash of ideas about how safe the world is and whether parents are free to make their own choices about raising their children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wouldn\u2019t have let them do it if we didn\u2019t think they were ready for it,\u201d Danielle said.<\/p>\n<p>She said her son and daughter have previously paired up for walks around the block, to a nearby 7-Eleven and to a library about three-quarters of a mile away. \u201cThey have proven they are responsible,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019ve developed these skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Meitivs say they believe in \u201cfree-range\u201d parenting, a movement that has been a counterpoint to the hyper-vigilance of \u201chelicopter\u201d parenting, with the idea that children learn self-reliance by being allowed to progressively test limits, make choices and venture out in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world is actually even safer than when I was a child, and I just want to give them the same freedom and independence that I had \u2014 basically an old-fashioned childhood,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it\u2019s absolutely critical for their development \u2014 to learn responsibility, to experience the world, to gain confidence and competency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/maryland-couple-want-free-range-kids-but-not-all-do\/2015\/01\/14\/d406c0be-9c0f-11e4-bcfb-059ec7a93ddc_story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">[Keep reading. . .]<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See also this f<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/montgomery-county-neglect-inquiry-shines-spotlight-on-free-range-parenting\/2015\/01\/17\/352d4b30-9d99-11e4-bcfb-059ec7a93ddc_story.html?hpid=z3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">ollowup story:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Two days after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/education\/maryland-couple-want-free-range-kids-but-not-all-do\/2015\/01\/14\/d406c0be-9c0f-11e4-bcfb-059ec7a93ddc_story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the story of their children\u2019s unsupervised walk <\/a>home from a park became the latest flash point in an ongoing cultural debate about what constitutes responsible parenting, Danielle and Alexander Meitiv were still explaining their \u201cold-fashioned\u201d methods of child-rearing.<\/p>\n<p>They eat dinner with their children. They enforce bedtimes, restrict screen times and assign chores. They go to synagogue.
