From \u2018Eggcorns\u2019: The Gaffes That Spread Like Wildflowers : The Two-Way : NPR<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Please pause if you\u2019re about to tell us our headline should say \u201cspread like wildfire.\u201d<\/p>\n

We intentionally slipped an eggcorn into that line \u2014 something we couldn\u2019t have done a week ago because, frankly, we\u2019d never heard of eggcorns.<\/p>\n

But thanks to Merriam-Webster, which included eggcorn among the more than 1,700 words added to its dictionary this past week, we learned that it is:<\/p>\n

\u201cA word or phrase that sounds like and is mistakenly used in a seemingly logical or plausible way for another word or phrase.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some examples:<\/p>\n

\u201cSpread like wildflowers\u201d is an eggcorn when used instead of \u201cspread like wildfire.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cColdslaw\u201d is an eggcorn if you meant \u201ccoleslaw.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSelf phone\u201d is an eggcorn of \u201ccellphone.\u201d<\/p>\n

You get the idea.<\/p>\n

These are sometimes used jocularly\u2013as in \u201cHey, I resemble that remark!\u201d\u2013or intentionally (as in \u201cstupidstition,\u201d to drive home the point with Stevie Wonder that superstition ain\u2019t the way).<\/p>\n
