{"id":21782,"date":"2015-07-10T06:00:34","date_gmt":"2015-07-10T10:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=21782"},"modified":"2015-07-10T10:34:20","modified_gmt":"2015-07-10T14:34:20","slug":"debt-guilt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2015\/07\/debt-guilt\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;debt&#8221; = &#8220;guilt&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>I\u2019ve read two articles on Germany\u2019s hard line against bailing out Greece that blame in part the German language.\u00a0 Says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/to-greeks-german-offers-of-help-sound-more-like-a-threat\/2015\/07\/07\/3c5be31e-24ab-11e5-b621-b55e495e9b78_story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Michael Birnbaum,<\/a> \u201cThis tough stance comes from a rules-oriented nation where even the language is conspiring against Greece\u2019s struggles: Germans use the same word for \u201cdebt\u201d and for \u201cguilt.\u201d\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/germanys-fiscal-hypocrisy\/2015\/07\/08\/8e969526-259f-11e5-b77f-eb13a215f593_story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Harold Meyerson <\/a>makes the same point.)<\/p>\n<p>Well, I\u2019ve got news for the journalists.\u00a0 \u201cDebt\u201d and \u201cguilt\u201d also use the same word in Greek.\u00a0 At least in New Testament Greek.\u00a0 This is why the Lord\u2019s Prayer is variously translated \u201cforgive us our trespasses\u201d and \u201cforgive us our debts.\u201d\u00a0 The Old English version says forgive us our \u201cgyltas,\u201d i.e., \u201cguilts.\u201d\u00a0 Let me explain the connection. . . .<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>First of all, the German word in question is <span class=\"cit cit-type-translation\" lang=\"de\"><span class=\"quote\">Schuld, which does indeed mean both guilt (or shame) and debt.<br>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"grc\">As for the Lord\u2019s Prayer, here is the original Greek in Matthew 6:12:\u00a0 \u03ba\u03b1\u1f76 \u1f04\u03c6\u03b5\u03c2 \u1f21\u03bc\u1fd6\u03bd \u03c4\u1f70 <strong>\u1f40\u03c6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03ae\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1<\/strong> \u1f21\u03bc\u1ff6\u03bd.\u00a0 That plural noun is derived from the word transliterated <em>opheilo, <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/biblehub.com\/greek\/3783.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">meaning<\/a>, \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"grc\">something owed, i.e. (figuratively) a due; morally, a fault \u2014 debt.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"lex_ful_tran l2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dict.com\/?t=en&amp;set=_gren&amp;w=debt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">(Modern Greek<\/a> has the similar \u03bf\u03c6\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03ae, which means \u201cdebt,\u201d with \u03bf\u03c6\u03b5\u03af\u03bb\u03c9 meaning\u201dshould\u201d or \u201cought.\u201d\u00a0 So there is a trace of the connection still.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The phrase in the Lord\u2019s Prayer literally means \u201cforgive us what we owe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"lex_ful_tran l2\">But that the same word can be used in these different senses\u2013and I believe it works in some other languages as well (please inform us if you know of some)\u2013is very revealing.<br>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Not so much that debt should make us feel guilty, but that guilt is, in fact, a debt.\u00a0 When we transgress God\u2019s moral law, we owe something.\u00a0 As we say even in English, we need to <em>pay<\/em> for what we did.\u00a0 Guilt even feels like an obligation, so that we often try to make up for the wrong we did by doing something good, as if we were balancing our account.<\/p>\n<p>The good news, though, is that Jesus has \u201cpaid\u201d for our sins.\u00a0 He has paid the price that we can never pay ourselves.\u00a0 He has \u201credeemed\u201d us\u2013bought us back, paid our ransom\u2013with His blood.\u00a0 He has forgiven our debts.\u00a0 Which, in turn, should inspire us to forgive our debtors, those who trespassed against us.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve read two articles on Germany\u2019s hard line against bailing out Greece that blame in part the German language.\u00a0 Says Michael Birnbaum, \u201cThis tough stance comes from a rules-oriented nation where even the language is conspiring against Greece\u2019s struggles: Germans use the same word for \u201cdebt\u201d and for \u201cguilt.\u201d\u00a0 (Harold Meyerson makes the same point.)
