Two of the leading presidency candidates in the polls right now are Donald Trump and Ben Carson.\u00a0 Another increasingly popular candidate is Carly Fiorina.\u00a0 The presidency would be the first elected office for each of them.<\/p>\n
Clearly, the public is sick of politicians, so these political outsiders have great appeal.\u00a0 But isn\u2019t some<\/em> experience in government helpful for someone in the top office?\u00a0 It is often said that we should run the government like a business.\u00a0 But is this really true?\u00a0 When people run things that aren\u2019t businesses like a business\u2013say, churches, colleges, non-profits\u2013isn\u2019t it always a disaster?<\/p>\n And yet I acknowledge the problem with politicians.\u00a0 Being able to get elected to an office is also not the same thing as governing.\u00a0 And someone good at the former may not be the best at the latter.<\/p>\n Former governors are probably the best qualified to run the federal government, since they have run governments before.\u00a0 Unlike people from the business world, they have had to deal with legislatures, courts, and bureaucracies.\u00a0 Pretending that such institutions can just be ignored by a strong leader is just unrealistic, given our constitutional system.<\/p>\n OK, I have just made an argument about the qualifications for the presidency.\u00a0 But this may be wrong.<\/p>\n Can you make a case for why someone who has not had a career in government should be elected president?\u00a0 Specifically, why a real estate developer, a surgeon, or a former high tech CEO is qualified to be president of the United States?<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Two of the leading presidency candidates in the polls right now are Donald Trump and Ben Carson.\u00a0 Another increasingly popular candidate is Carly Fiorina.\u00a0 The presidency would be the first elected office for each of them.
