{"id":22274,"date":"2015-09-25T06:00:55","date_gmt":"2015-09-25T10:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=22274"},"modified":"2015-09-24T17:03:37","modified_gmt":"2015-09-24T21:03:37","slug":"the-popes-sermon-to-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2015\/09\/the-popes-sermon-to-america\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pope&#8217;s sermon to America"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Pope Francis addressed a joint session of Congress, taking the opportunity to preach against tenets of both liberalism and conservatism.\u00a0 Liberals were zinged by his remarks opposing abortion, redefining the family, and infringing upon religious liberty.\u00a0 Conservatives were zinged by his remarks on the necessity of supporting immigrants, measures to combat climate change, the elimination of the death penalty, tempering the excesses of capitalism, offering help for the poor, and (interestingly) opposing \u201cfundamentalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To his credit, the Pope twice mentioned \u201cvocation\u201d in a more or less Lutheran sense (as opposed to the medieval Catholic application of the term to church professions alone):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A political society endures when it seeks, as a vocation, to satisfy common needs by stimulating the growth of all its members, especially those in situations of greater vulnerability or risk.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>\u201cBusiness is a noble vocation, directed to producing wealth and improving the world. It can be a fruitful source of prosperity for the area in which it operates, especially if it sees the creation of jobs as an essential part of its service to the common good\u201d (Laudato Si\u2019, bent on keeping illegal immigrants and Middle Eastern refugees out of the United States, saying Thursday in a landmark address to Congress that Americans should show compassion to immigrants of all stripes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018When the stranger in our midst appeals to us, we must not repeat the sins and the errors of the past,\u2019 the Roman Catholic pontiff said. \u2018We must resolve now to live as nobly and as justly as possible, as we educate new generations not to turn their back on our \u201cneighbors\u201d and everything around us.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in English \u2013 a language he has learned only recently \u2013 Francis also dropped coded messages to conservatives about gay marriage and abortion, and made an impassioned plea for a left-leaning approach to capital punishment in an unprecedented visit to Capitol Hill by a sitting Pope.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I cannot hide my concern for the family, which is threatened, perhaps as never before, from within and without,\u2019 Francis told a packed House chamber filled with legislators, Supreme Court justices and multiple presidential candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">\u2018Fundamental relationships are being called into question, as is the very basis of marriage and the family.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">And without mentioning abortion by name \u2013 or the name of the embattled domestic Planned Parenthood organization \u2013 Francis told lawmakers that the \u2018Golden Rule \u2026 reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; color: #000000; background-color: text-decoration: none;\">Or is there another way of drawing on some liberal and some conservative causes so as to carve out a Christian alternative that could find support from both sides and heal our political polarization (which the Pope also decried)?<\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; color: #000000; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; color: #000000; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;\">As it is, most conservative Christians are conservative in everything, and most liberal Christians are liberal in everything.\u00a0 Is that likely to be a faithful course?<\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; color: #000000; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; color: #000000; background-color: #ffffff; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;\">Or should the Church stay out of governing the world, with Christians forming their own secular political opinions while keeping as their main priority the Kingdom of Heaven?<\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; color: #000000; background-color: #ffffff;
