At the Democratic debate, the candidates were asked \u201cwhat enemy are you most proud of?\u201d\u00a0 O\u2019Malley said, the NRA; Chafee said, the coal industry; Saunders said, pharmaceutical companies; Clinton said, Republicans.\u00a0 Jim Webb said, \u201cthe enemy soldier who threw the grenade that wounded me, but he\u2019s not around right now to talk to.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019d say.\u00a0 Webb killed him.\u00a0 And the reason Webb was wounded is that he threw himself between the grenade and one of his men, saving his life.<\/p>\n

And that wasn\u2019t all he did that day in Vietnam.\u00a0 Details of the actions that earned him a Navy Star after the jump.<\/p>\n

Tuesday night at the Democratic debate, Jim Webb said the enemy that he is most proud of making is the \u201cenemy soldier that threw the grenade that wounded me, but he\u2019s not around right now to talk to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Webb, a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War, has received the Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.<\/p>\n

According to his Navy Cross citation, on July 10, 1969, Webb\u2019s platoon discovered a well-camouflaged bunker complex which appeared to be unoccupied while on a search and destroy mission.<\/p>\n

Webb went in to clear the first bunker when three enemy soldiers armed with hand grenades jumped out. \u201cReacting instantly,\u201d the citation reads, \u201che grabbed the closest man and, brandishing his .45 caliber pistol at the others, apprehended all three of the soldiers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Accompanied by one of his men, Webb\u00a0then approached the second bunker when an enemy soldier\u00a0threw a grenade at him, which\u00a0detonated in close proximity. Then, \u201cFirst Lieutenant Webb detonated a claymore mine in the bunker aperture,\u201d the citation says, \u201caccounting for two enemy casualties and disclosing the entrance to a tunnel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upon searching the tunnel, Webb discovered enemy equipment\u00a0and \u201cnumerous documents containing valuable intelligence data.\u201d<\/p>\n

When he reached a\u00a0third bunker, another enemy threw yet another grenade at him. Seeing that\u00a0the grenade landed dangerously close to one of his men, Webb fired his weapon at the enemy, pushed the Marine away from the grenade, and shielded him from the explosion with his own body.<\/p>\n

Although Webb sustained fragmentation wounds from the explosion, he managed to throw a grenade into the bunker which destroyed\u00a0it.<\/p>\n

The Navy Cross is the second highest award a Marine can receive for meritorious service in combat.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
