If it was still Disqus I would just go in and respond as the magazine.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: medium;\">Can you tell folks: We did <i>not<\/i> ask people to rank a list. We just wrote and asked them to list their top 5. The list that is there arose organically out of those responses.\u00a0 The \u201cothers we love\u201d from the top 100 were chosen by me specifically to address gender and racial imbalances [because honestly, everything that was mentioned was pretty awesome] and I still wish I had thought more about the need to include Orthodox writers.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<!--more-->\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: medium;\">Also, the magazine\u2019s editor (me) is a Methodist-turned-Anglican, so I was not trying to shape a Reformed-heavy list by any means.\u00a0 Its shape arose from our decision to survey past writers for the magazine, who come largely from the Reformed mainstream of evangelicalism.\u00a0 I am a cradle mainliner (I often describe myself as doctrinally orthodox but not culturally evangelical; more on that here if people want to know: <\/span><span style=\"color: blue; font-family: Garamond; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/missionwork\/2015\/07\/first-evangelical-crossroads\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\">http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/missionwork\/2015\/07\/first-evangelical-crossroads\/<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: medium;\">) so maybe that excuses my love for Julian of Norwich. \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can send people to my post about the issue too. Somebody brought it up in the comments but not everybody has seen it. <span style=\"color: blue; font-family: Garamond; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianhistoryinstitute.org\/blog\/post\/yes-these-are-some-of-the-writings-that-changed-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/www.christianhistoryinstitute.org\/blog\/post\/yes-these-are-some-of-the-writings-that-changed-the-world\/<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 Also, to my editor\u2019s letter: <\/span><span style=\"color: blue; font-family: Garamond; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianhistoryinstitute.org\/magazine\/article\/editors-note-great-wrtings\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/www.christianhistoryinstitute.org\/magazine\/article\/editors-note-great-wrtings<\/a><\/span><\/span><br>\n<span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: small;\">________________<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The gist of our discussion was to complain that it was too Reformed\/evangelical and not Lutheran enough, but that Luther had three titles on the list, more than anyone except Augustine, is even more striking now that we know that these titles made it by virtue of being in so many \u201ctop 5\u201d lists.<\/p>\n<p>And the test is \u201cinfluence.\u201d\u00a0 The 95 theses sparked the Reformation, and Luther\u2019s \u201cLectures on Romans\u201d led to the conversion of both John Bunyan and John Wesley, two others who made the list.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t see how anyone can complain about racial or gender imbalance in an \u201cinfluence\u201d list.\u00a0 If, as is often said, \u201cthese voices were silenced,\u201d how could they be influential?\u00a0 And, conversely, if they were among the most influential, in what sense were they marginalized?<\/p>\n<p>I do think some more popular titles might have been more influential than some of these more distinguished works.\u00a0 For example, Charles Sheldon\u2019s <em>In His Steps<\/em>, published in 1896, about people governing their lives in answer to the question \u201cWhat Would Jesus Do?,\u201d was one of the biggest sellers ever, but a terrible novel with terrible theology (what it said Jesus would do is promote prohibition and blue laws\u2013nevermind the charges against Him that He was a wine-bibber and breaker of the Sabbath).\u00a0 Yet the book did a lot to promote the moralism and the social gospel of the new liberal theology.<\/p>\n<p>What other works would you cite for their influence, whether for good or for bad?<\/p><\/div>\n<\/blockquote><\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The editor of Christian History, Jennifer Woodruff Tait, wrote me about our post on that magazine\u2019s list of the top 25 most influential spiritual classics.\u00a0 She wanted to reply to some of your comments, but got tangled up in World Table (!!!), so I said I\u2019d pass along what she said: Thanks for featuring the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1281,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9,28],"tags":[4177],"class_list":["post-22748","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog","category-literature","tag-spiritual-classics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
