A priceless fragment of the Greek New Testament, a text from St. John\u2019s gospel, was discovered on eBay, with an opening bid of $99.\u00a0 (Similar texts have sold for $500,000.)\u00a0 A relative of a deceased Bible scholar and collector came into possession of the document, not really knowing what he had.\u00a0 Another scholar saw the eBay offering, contacted the seller, and persuaded him to pull the auction and make it available for study.\u00a0 It turns out that the fragment is especially significant because it appears to come from a scroll, whereas all other ancient New Testament texts are from the book-like pages of a codex.<\/p>\n

Last January, Geoffrey Smith, a scholar of early Christianity at the University of Texas, noticed something startling: an eBay listing for an ancient Greek papyrus fragment of the Gospel of John \u2014 with an opening bid of only $99.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought, This can\u2019t be allowed to sell on eBay,\u201d Dr. Smith said. \u201cIt will just disappear into a private collection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Smith contacted the seller and urged him to halt the online auction \u2014 apparently the first on eBay for a Greek New Testament papyrus, he and other scholars said \u2014 and let him study the fragment. The seller agreed, and now, on Saturday, Mr. Smith will present his research at the annual conference of the Society of Biblical Literature in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

The credit-card-size papyrus, which Dr. Smith dates from around A.D. 250 to A.D. 350, contains about six lines of the Gospel of John on one side and an unidentified Christian text on the other. If Dr. Smith\u2019s analysis is correct, it is the only known Greek New Testament papyrus from an unused scroll rather than a codex, the emerging book technology that early Christians, in sharp contrast to their Jewish and pagan contemporaries, preferred for their texts.<\/p>\n

That adds an interesting wrinkle, scholars say, to the story of the rise of the codex, the book as we know it today. But the dramatic story of the papyrus\u2019s emergence also speaks to a distinctly 21st-century technological anxiety.<\/p>\n
