charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Today is Maundy Thursday, arguably the climax of our Lord\u2019s earthly ministry, the day He washed His disciple\u2019s feet, gave them the mandate (thus, \u201cmaundy\u201d) to love one another, instituted the Sacrament of Holy Communion, experienced agony in the garden, gave His high priestly prayer for his disciples and for all who would later believe (us), was betrayed, arrested, scourged, and abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>After the jump, one of my favorite poems, by George Herbert, a Maundy Thursday\/Good Friday poem that brings together many of these themes in an unforgettable way. \u00a0(I\u2019ve posted it here before, but it is worth re-reading at this time of year over and over.)<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #990000;\">THE AGONY<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Philosophers have measured mountains,<br>\nFathom\u2019d the depths of seas, of states, and kings,<br>\nWalk\u2019d with a staff to heaven, and traced fountains<br>\nBut there are two vast, spacious things,<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\nThe which to measure it doth more behove:<br>\nYet few there are that sound them; Sin and Love.\n<p>Who would know Sin, let him repair<br>\nUnto Mount Olivet; there shall he see<br>\nA man, so wrung with pains, that all his hair,<br>\nHis skin, his garments, bloody be.<br>\nSin is that Press and Vice, which forceth pain<br>\nTo hunt his cruel food through every vein.<\/p>\n<p>Who knows not Love, let him assay,<br>\nAnd taste that juice, which on the cross a pike<br>\nDid set again abroach;
