As you may have heard, Donald Trump told an interviewer that his favorite Bible verse was \u201can eye for an eye.\u201d \u00a0He was referring to Leviticus 24:20<\/a>. \u00a0I guess he hasn\u2019t got to Matthew 5:38-39<\/a>. \u00a0Read the details and the context after the jump.<\/p>\n

Is that Levitical principle of retaliation\u2013which commenters say limits<\/em> revenge to the injury incurred\u2013appropriate for non-Levitical governments? \u00a0Does the doctrine of the Two Kingdoms give a place for this principle? \u00a0And even if it does, what does it say that retaliation is this presidential candidate\u2019s\u00a0favorite<\/em> verse?<\/p>\n

From \u00a0Trump Says His Favorite Bible Verse Is \u2018An Eye For An Eye\u2019<\/a>, The Federalist:<\/em><\/p>\n

In an interview today [April 14] with a local New York radio host, Bob Lonsberry, on WHAM 1180AM, Donald Trump said his favorite Bible verse is the Old Testament passage<\/a> which says one can take \u201can eye for an eye.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to Lonsberry\u2019s question about which verse in the Bible is his favorite, Trump initially responded \u201cso many,\u201d then followed it up by saying that \u201can eye for an eye\u201d is a good verse for Americans to follow, even if it is, by his own admission, a little mean.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I think many,\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou know when we get into the Bible I think many, so many. And \u2018an eye for an eye,\u2019 you can almost say that. It\u2019s not a particularly nice thing, but you know when you look at what\u2019s happening to our country, I mean, you see what\u2019s going on with our country how people are taking advantage of us and how they scoff at us and laugh at us an laugh in our face and they\u2019re taking our jobs, they\u2019re taking our money, they\u2019re taking our \u2014 you know, they\u2019re taking the health of our country. And we have to be very firm and we have to be very strong and we can learn a lot from the Bible, that I can tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The phrase \u201can eye for an eye\u201d appears elsewhere in the Bible, too. In Matthew 5:38<\/a>, Jesus tells his disciples that instead of seeking revenge by taking \u201can eye for an eye\u201d they should \u201cturn the other cheek.\u201d<\/p>\n
