{"id":24972,"date":"2016-08-30T05:45:11","date_gmt":"2016-08-30T09:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=24972"},"modified":"2016-08-29T18:59:49","modified_gmt":"2016-08-29T22:59:49","slug":"our-spirituality-and-abortion-are-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2016\/08\/our-spirituality-and-abortion-are-one\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Our spirituality and abortion are one&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The goal of the \u201cpro-choice\u201d movement used to be to make abortions \u201clegal, safe, and rare.\u201d \u00a0But why \u201crare\u201d? \u00a0That implies that there is something wrong with abortion. \u00a0Pro-choicers today are now proudly\u00a0\u201cpro-abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0strategy now is for women to openly talk about their abortions as a good thing. \u00a0Just as sentiment about homosexuality\u00a0changed when gays \u201ccame out\u201d and Americans discovered that they their number included many people whom they knew and cared about, openness about abortion, it is thought, will help get rid of the stigma against it.<\/p>\n<p>A number of new initiatives are coming out from the pro-death folks, including \u201cabortion concerts\u201d in 30 cities on September 10. \u00a0Then there is the \u201cWe Testify\u201d program, which uses religious language in having women \u201ctestify\u201d to the \u201cspirituality\u201d of their abortions.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From Alexandra DeSanctis,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/439392\/abortion-concerts-culture-death\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Abortion Concerts \u2013 Culture of Death | National Review<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<blockquote><p>If you live in one of these 30 major cities across the country, be sure to clear your calendar on September 10 for a free concert\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0in support of expanded access to abortion. According to the event website, \u201cAll Access isn\u2019t just a concert, it\u2019s a powerful cultural event that unites people of all ages, racial and gender identities to expand our access to abortion and celebrate our collective power.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Abortion supporters have been dragging this divisive issue into the limelight for many years \u2014 albeit previously without the marketing tactic of a nationwide concert glorifying the subject \u2014 as the former appeal of the outdated Democratic mantra \u201csafe, legal, and rare\u201d fades to nothing more than a fond memory.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>These days, left-wing celebrities such as Lena Dunham dress up as abortionists for Halloween and groups such as NARAL crack jokes about the supposed hilarity of getting an abortion. Radical abortion supporters\u2019 staging vulgar protests or doing victory dances in the public square is nothing new. But a widespread attempt to mainstream abortion as a social good in itself is something else entirely, and the All Access concert is far from the only example of this recent phenomenon. . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>The National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF), meanwhile, recently launched its \u201cWe Testify\u201d website with a similar goal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Every day someone chooses to have an abortion. We are not alone in this decision, however, due to stigma, we\u2019re often made to feel isolated and shamed. Our stories remind us and those around us that we\u2019re not alone. We testify as experts to our experiences. We testify that our spirituality and abortion are one. We testify on behalf of our communities and others who\u2019ve had abortions across the country.
