{"id":25191,"date":"2016-10-03T06:00:51","date_gmt":"2016-10-03T10:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=25191"},"modified":"2016-10-02T18:45:23","modified_gmt":"2016-10-02T22:45:23","slug":"religion-replaces-sex-on-the-banned-book-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2016\/10\/religion-replaces-sex-on-the-banned-book-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Religion replaces sex on the Banned Book list"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Last week was Banned Books Week, the American Library Association\u2019s tribute to books they get complaints about. \u00a0Now this observance is essentially bogus. \u00a0None of the current books they list every year have actually been banned. \u00a0Complaints are not the same as censorship. \u00a0Libraries have a certain budget and select what books they want to purchase. \u00a0The closest thing to censorship would be if librarians refuse to buy, say, conservative books or Christian books because they don\u2019t agree with them and so prevent their patrons from reading them.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, it\u2019s telling\u00a0to see what books make the \u201cBanned Book\u201d lists, which are sort of a bellwether of the hot button issues from year to year.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, most of the \u201cbanned books\u201d raised objections because they contained sex scenes that parents considered unsuitable for children. \u00a0But this year, five of the ten most \u201cbanned\u201d books drew objections because of their religious perspective.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>Number 6 on the list is the Bible. \u00a0Secularists are wanting it to be banned because of its violence, intolerance, and because they think having it in a school or public library violates the separation of church and state.<\/p>\n<p>Of the other titles that draw objections for religious reasons, they aren\u2019t so Christian friendly: \u00a0one is pro-Islam, one promotes atheism, and the other two deal with LGBT issues and are probably critical of conservative religion. Most of the other titles that raised objections had gay and transgender themes.<\/p>\n<p>But those are the flash points today: \u00a0LGBT and religion.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theindychannel.com\/newsy\/the-banned-book-list-hints-at-what-americans-find-offensive\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Banned Book List Hints At What Americans Find Offensive \u2013 Newsy Story<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This week is known as Banned Books Week, which was founded to support \u201cthe freedom to seek and to express ideas.\u201d It also shows that some ideas face a lot more opposition than others.<br>\nEvery year, the American Library Association makes a list of the books that receive the most challenges \u2014 in other words, the books people want to see pulled from library shelves.<\/p>\n<p>In 2001, nine of the top 10 most challenged books were on the banned book list because opponents said they had offensive language, sexually explicit passages or both.<\/p>\n<p>The only one that didn\u2019t was Harry Potter. The series was challenged over its \u201creligious viewpoint\u201d \u2014 the only one of the top 10 to face that objection.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to 2015, and five of the top 10 most challenged books faced opposition over their religious viewpoints.
