{"id":25257,"date":"2016-10-12T05:30:34","date_gmt":"2016-10-12T09:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=25257"},"modified":"2016-10-12T10:22:22","modified_gmt":"2016-10-12T14:22:22","slug":"to-evacuate-or-not-to-evacuate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2016\/10\/to-evacuate-or-not-to-evacuate\/","title":{"rendered":"To evacuate, or not to evacuate"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Coastal areas in Florida and other Southeastern states evacuated their populations to escape Hurricane Matthew. \u00a0But when it hit, it sort of fizzled out. \u00a0While the hurricane took over 500 lives (maybe as many as a thousand), particularly in Haiti, it didn\u2019t do that much to the United States. \u00a0So now lots of people who were evacuated are angry about having to leave.<\/p>\n<p>Aren\u2019t we supposed to err on the side of caution? \u00a0Aren\u2019t we supposed to prepare for the worst and then be glad if it doesn\u2019t happen? \u00a0Or was there something about this evacuation that made it especially annoying? \u00a0(I\u2019d like to hear from any of you who were affected.)<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: \u00a0The hurricane\u2019s force has abated but now comes <a href=\"http:\/\/frontpage.pch.com\/story\/322346\/north-carolina-braces-for-more-flooding-in-downstream-towns?category=news\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the flooding<\/a>. \u00a0North Carolina is especially affected, with more people evacuated as floodwaters are ravaging some counties. \u00a0So far 34 Americans\u00a0have died from the Hurricane, half of them in North Carolina.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From Curt Anderson,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/weather\/hurricanes\/after-matthew-some-second-guess-their-decision-to-evacuate\/2297459\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">After Matthew, some second-guess their decision to evacuate | Tampa Bay Times<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>MIAMI \u2014 Maureen Miller was among the 2 million people ordered to evacuate coastal areas in the Southeast ahead of Hurricane Matthew. Her family and their dog spent two nights in a hotel and struggled through police roadblocks to return.<\/p>\n<p>When they finally got back, their Brunswick, Georgia-area home was unscathed. Now they wish they had never left.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will never evacuate again,\u201d Miller said. \u201cIf we stayed, we\u2019d be fine. I\u2019m sure there are a lot of people who feel the same way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weather experts and government officials worry that people who quickly packed up and left but whose homes sustained little or no damage might be reluctant to evacuate next time, leading to deadly consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a culture that seems to get angry if the worst-case scenario doesn\u2019t happen and we prepare for it,\u201d said Marshall Shepherd, director of the University of Georgia Atmospheric Sciences Program. \u201cI am continually baffled at the people that seem to anger that there is not more loss of life and destruction.
