{"id":25369,"date":"2016-10-26T05:50:23","date_gmt":"2016-10-26T09:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=25369"},"modified":"2016-10-25T21:42:25","modified_gmt":"2016-10-26T01:42:25","slug":"the-a-vote-for-a-third-party-is-a-vote-for-clinton-fallacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2016\/10\/the-a-vote-for-a-third-party-is-a-vote-for-clinton-fallacy\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;a vote for a third party is a vote for Clinton&#8221; fallacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Those\u00a0who say they are voting for a third party or independent candidate often hear that doing so is equivalent to a vote for Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>In this reasoning, not voting for Donald Trump is voting for Clinton. \u00a0This is because, I assume, a vote that Trump doesn\u2019t get is helping his opponent win her majority.<\/p>\n<p>But you could just as easily say that voting for a third party or independent candidate is also a vote that Hillary Clinton doesn\u2019t get.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I suppose conservatives who don\u2019t like Trump hear this more than liberals who don\u2019t like Clinton. \u00a0The latter could be told that a vote for the Green Party is a vote for Trump.<\/p>\n<p>But the assumption is that the conservative who doesn\u2019t like Trump <em>would<\/em> vote for him, that he would rather Trump win than Clinton. \u00a0But that begs the question. \u00a0If the person thought that Trump would be better than Clinton, he or she would surely vote for him. \u00a0Choosing a third party is saying \u201ca plague on both your houses,\u201d that neither is clearly better than the other.<\/p>\n<p>Again, we just have to vote for the person we want to be elected and let the chips fall where they may.<\/p>\n<p>Or am I missing something?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those\u00a0who say they are voting for a third party or independent candidate often hear that doing so is equivalent to a vote for Hillary Clinton.
