Bannon has been associated, perhaps unfairly, with the alt.right and has been a target\u00a0of criticism for his allegedly extremist views.<\/p>\n

The president\u2019s action in removing Bannon is said to have resulted from a\u00a0feud among his advisors<\/a>\u00a0and may be part of a larger staff shakeup.<\/p>\n

Bannon was replaced on the NSC <\/a>\u00a0by Rick Perry, the former Texas governor and presidential candidate who is now Secretary of Energy, the department that has charge of the nuclear arsenal. \u00a0Also the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Director of National Intelligence were put back on the committee. UPDATE: \u00a0Also UN secretary Nikki Haley.<\/a><\/p>\n

Said one former staffer, Banner \u201cis an ideologue. \u00a0Trump is not.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump\u2019s decision to remove chief strategist Steve Bannon from the National Security Council\u2019s principals committee suggests a potentially significant change in the power balance among the four top White House advisers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bannon\u2019s placement on the principals committee at the start of the Trump administration drew criticism not only from Democrats but also from many Republicans and prominent members of the intelligence community. The idea that Bannon, who, prior to his hiring as the chief political strategist to Trump\u2019s campaign, had been the CEO of a conservative news website, would sit on a committee typically reserved only for the upper echelon of the military, raised questions about the scope of his influence within the White House.<\/div>\n

It was part of a broader ascension of Bannon within the West Wing; he was widely regarded in the early days of the administration as a first among equals in a group that included chief of staff Reince Priebus, counselor Kellyanne Conway and son-in-law Jared Kushner.<\/div>\n

That ascension has clearly faltered. The removal of Bannon from the NSC comes in the wake of a series of other moves \u2014 most notably the arrival of Trump\u2019s daughter, Ivanka, in the West Wing \u2014 that suggest that the president is moving away (at least for the moment) from the more hard-line ideological bent of Bannon.<\/div>\n
