{"id":28725,"date":"2017-07-06T05:30:08","date_gmt":"2017-07-06T09:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=28725"},"modified":"2017-07-04T15:33:05","modified_gmt":"2017-07-04T19:33:05","slug":"why-the-second-paragraph-in-the-declaration-of-independence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2017\/07\/why-the-second-paragraph-in-the-declaration-of-independence\/","title":{"rendered":"Why the second paragraph in the Declaration of Independence?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2017\/07\/16_abraham_lincoln1-e1499196493980.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-28727\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28727\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2017\/07\/16_abraham_lincoln1-e1499196493980.jpg\" alt=\"16_abraham_lincoln[1]\" width=\"600\" height=\"339\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the Declaration of Independence was for the American colonies to formally break away from Great Britain and to form a separate country.<\/p>\n<p>As Abraham Lincoln observed, this could have been done without all of that material in the second paragraph about\u00a0God, equality, and unalienable rights:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\nSo why did the Founders include this? \u00a0Especially since many of them, including the author of these words, were slave holders who did not act on the principle that \u201call men are created equal\u201d and hold God-given rights, including that of liberty.\n<p>Lincoln gives a remarkably good answer to this question, as discussed by columnist Michael Gerson.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>From Michael Gerson,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/america-isnt-a-normal-country\/2017\/07\/03\/5e6b82a0-6024-11e7-a4f7-af34fc1d9d39_story.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">America isn\u2019t a normal country \u2013 The Washington Post<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As Abraham Lincoln noted, the Declaration could have established national independence without its second paragraph about the human rights to \u201clife, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.\u201d \u201cThe assertion that \u2018all men are created equal,\u2019 \u201d Lincoln\u00a0<a title=\"books.google.com\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=EajjCwAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PT108&amp;lpg=PT108&amp;dq=%E2%80%9Cwas+of+no+practical+use+in+effecting+our+separation+from+Great+Britain.%E2%80%9D&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=VRr99Vj8Bm&amp;sig=jxU6G3lxVsoWuo7SATPNKi1VjeM&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwi6n5yP7-3UAhUEeT4KHV56Ag4Q6AEIPzAG#v=onepage&amp;q=%E2%80%9Cwas%20of%20no%20practical%20use%20in%20effecting%20our%20separation%20from%20Great%20Britain.%E2%80%9D&amp;f=false\" shape=\"rect\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">argued<\/a>, \u201cwas of no practical use in effecting our separation from Great Britain.\u201d As he saw it, the Founders, while constrained by the political realities of their time, set out a non-arbitrary, timeless truth \u201cfor future use.\u201d<iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/701\/wpni.opinions\/article_4\" title=\"3rd party ad content\" src=\"https:\/\/tpc.googlesyndication.com\/safeframe\/1-0-9\/html\/container.html\" name=\"\" width=\"0\" height=\"164\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-is-safeframe=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey meant simply to declare the right,\u201d said Lincoln, \u201cso that the enforcement of it might follow as fast as circumstances should permit. They meant to set up a standard maxim for free society, which should be familiar to all, and revered by all; constantly looked to, constantly labored for .\u2009.\u2009. even though never perfectly attained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why is that maxim so important? At one level, Lincoln\u2019s answer was bluntly practical. If liberty is denied to anyone, it could eventually be denied to you. \u201cAnd when you have stricken down the principles of the Declaration of Independence,\u201d he said, \u201cand thereby consigned the Negro to hopeless and eternal bondage, are you quite sure that the demon will not turn and rend you? Will not the people then be ready to go down beneath the tread of any tyrant who may wish to rule them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Lincoln\u00a0<a title=\"www.nps.gov\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/liho\/learn\/historyculture\/independence-hall.htm\" shape=\"rect\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">also saw<\/a>\u00a0the Declaration as the embodiment of a moral ideal. \u201cIt was not the mere matter of the separation of the colonies from the motherland; but something in that Declaration giving liberty, not alone to the people of this country, but hope to the world for all future time.
