The zeal to support the LGBT cause has led to a \u201crethinking\u201d of the freedom of religion, with calls to limit religious liberty when it manifests itself in public disapproval of homosexuality. \u00a0Now the zeal to support the anti-racist cause and the revulsion against the white nationalists at Charlottesville has led to calls to \u201crethink\u201d freedom of speech.<\/p>\n

Though the American Civil Liberties Union has become pretty much just another liberal interest group, on one civil liberty issue it has remained firm: \u00a0the freedom of speech and the freedom of assembly. \u00a0Thus, the ACLU defends the right of everyone to say their piece in the public square, including the Ku Klux Klan, Westboro Baptists, and other noxious groups, going so far as to intervene for them in the courts. \u00a0The ACLU is also defending the white nationalist protesters in Charlottesville.<\/p>\n

This is too much for some of the ACLU\u2019s supporters. \u00a0At least one board member has resigned, donors have closed their pocketbooks, and many liberals are criticizing the policies that extend free legal aid to those who hold such abhorrent ideologies.<\/p>\n

Such criticism is completely understandable, but the ACLU counters by making the point that \u201cwe all need to defend the speech we hate\u201d<\/a>; otherwise, freedom of speech means nothing.<\/p>\n

This can be debated and there might be some lines that could be drawn. \u00a0But, as so often happens, in the heat of debate, more extreme measures get proposed.<\/p>\n

The New York Times has printed a column by K-Sue Park entitled The ACLU Needs to Rethink Free Speech<\/a>. \u00a0Applying the familiar post-Marxist analysis, she makes the point that the rich and powerful have more access to free speech than do the poor and marginalized. \u00a0Therefore, the ACLU\u2019s policy of defending everybody\u2019s free speech no matter what, puts the latter at a disadvantage.<\/p>\n

But if limits need to be placed on the speech of the rich and powerful\u2013though she specifically targets \u201cright wing\u201d speech\u2013who will enforce that?<\/p>\n

Charles C. W. Cooke has written a rejoinder to the New York Times<\/em> piece entitled \u201cYes, Let\u2019s Rethink Free Speech.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 Using a satirical, ironic, Modest Proposal <\/a>approach, Cooke makes the point that the final arbiter of what speech will be permitted and what will not is going to be the government. \u00a0Right now, the federal government is headed by President Donald Trump and most state governments are firmly in the hands of Republicans.<\/p>\n

Do liberals really want them\u00a0<\/em>to control what speech is allowed?<\/p>\n

Yes, leftist regimes tend to impose speech codes and to punish dissenting voices. \u00a0But the left does not completely control the United States, at least not at this point in dialectical history.<\/p>\n

Until then, maybe even leftists should support what the Times piece derides as the \u201cnarrow reading\u201d of the First Amendment that \u201cis the result of 50 years of unanimous Supreme Court precedent.\u201d<\/p>\n
