But for white evangelicals just 26 per cent say life has got worse and 49 per cent say it has improved, according to a ComRes poll commissioned by the new opinion website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">UnHerd<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This very much confirms Trump as the Marmite President, said editor Tim Montgomerie. \u2018We know he has polarised opinions and over on this side of the Atlantic, we read his tweets which paint him as an insensitive and impulsive maverick, but there are clearly plenty of people in the US who feel his Presidency is benefiting them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The poll comes ahead of a new documentary,\u00a0<em>Trump and the Evangelicals<\/em>, released on Monday by the website which focuses on evangelicals\u2019 loves of Trump.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about a string of policies Trump has worked on, white evangelicals were consistently more approving than the rest of Americans.<\/p>\n<p>So I looked up \u201cMarmite,\u201d finding this from the <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/marmite\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cambridge English Dictionary:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Marmite<\/h2>\n<div class=\"pos-header\">\n<h3 class=\"di-title cdo-section-title-hw\"><span class=\"posgram ico-bg\"><span class=\"pos\" title=\"A word that refers to a person, place, idea, event or thing.\">noun<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"gram\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/help\/codes.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">[<span class=\"gcs\">\u00a0<span class=\"gc\" title=\"Uncountable noun: noun with no plural form. Used more in speech.\">informal.<\/span><\/span><\/span><b class=\"def\">something or someone that some\u00a0<a class=\"query decorated-link\" title=\"people\" href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">people<\/a>\u00a0like very much and other\u00a0<a class=\"query decorated-link\" title=\"people\" href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">people<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"query decorated-link\" title=\"dislike\" href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/dislike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">dislike<\/a>\u00a0very\u00a0<a class=\"query decorated-link\" title=\"strongly\" href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/us\/dictionary\/english\/strongly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">strongly.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Marmite must be the same basic product that Australians eat as Vegemite!\u00a0 (Somebody correct me if I\u2019m wrong.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vegemite\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Vegemite<\/a> is made out of brewer\u2019s yeast extract.\u00a0 It\u2019s salty, bitter, savory, and looks like and has the consistency of axle grease.\u00a0 \u00a0Aussies spread it on toast, eat it as a sandwich, put it on other stuff.<\/p>\n<p>And, as with the Marmite definition, people either just LOVE it, developing unspeakable cravings for it, or they HATE it beyond all measure.<\/p>\n<p>Here in Australia, most of the populace likes it, or says they do, considering it to be a national food, the test of a true Aussie.\u00a0 Most everyone else, at least the tourists, can\u2019t stand it.<\/p>\n<p>Me, I can stand it.\u00a0 But I wouldn\u2019t say that I like it.<\/p>\n<p>But the extreme polarity of responses to it are indeed interesting and it does give us a word that accounts for a particular semantic space of our day, a term we need.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, Trump is a Marmite President, which, being translated into Australian, would be a \u201cVegemite President.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t intend for us to discuss President Trump yet again.\u00a0 My interest here is \u201cMarmite\u201d or \u201cVegemite\u201d as an adjective and the concept it names.<\/p>\n<p>What else could be described as \u201cMarmite\u201d (or \u201cVegemite\u201d) in this sense?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Illustration by\u00a0AZAdam \/ AdamScharks at en.wikipedia. He has authored over 25 books on Christianity and culture, literature, classical education, and theology. Dr. Veith previously held academic and editorial roles at Concordia University Wisconsin and WORLD Magazine. A respected voice in Lutheran and classical education circles, he holds a Ph.D. in English and several honorary doctorates.
