{"id":336,"date":"2008-02-14T09:13:23","date_gmt":"2008-02-14T13:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geneveith.com\/valentine-martyr\/_336\/"},"modified":"2008-02-14T09:13:23","modified_gmt":"2008-02-14T13:13:23","slug":"valentine-martyr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2008\/02\/valentine-martyr\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Valentine, Martyr"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>On this day in 270 A.D., a priest named \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lonekeep.com\/lki_home\/Valentine.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Valentine<\/a>\u00a0refused to renounce his faith, despite strenuous efforts to dissuade him and many benefits promised to him if he would only deny Christ. \u00a0Valentine refused, so he was first beaten with clubs and then beheaded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if this is another holiday co-opted by the secularists that Christians could reclaim. \u00a0(Yes, there are connections to love and marriage in the saint\u2019s tales, though they seem to apply to another martyr named Valentine who married Christian couples despite the Emperor forbidding that practice. \u00a0He was also honored on this day, simply because he shared the name of the other guy, though he had no connection as such with February 14, unlike the man who died on that day.)But how could we breathe Christian meaning into this observance? \u00a0Celebrate the refusal to back down, whether in faith or in keeping one\u2019s marriage vows despite all pressure? \u00a0Celebrate the institution of marriage even though the prevailing culture, like the old Emperor, works against it? \u00a0Who are some other martyrs for love? \u00a0What would be some good customs that we should start?\u00a0Anyway, to brighten your day, here is a picture of his relics in Rome, including what is said to be his actual skull that was removed from his body.
