\nPolanski was allowed to plead guilty to one of six charges, unlawful sexual intercourse, and was sent to prison for 42 days of evaluation.\n

Lawyers agreed that would be his full sentence, but the judge tried to renege on the plea bargain. Aware the judge would sentence him to more prison time and require his voluntary deportation, Polanski fled.<\/p>\n

Zurich Film Festival organizers said Polanski\u2019s detention had caused \u201cshock and dismay,\u201d but said they would go ahead with Sunday\u2019s planned retrospective of the director\u2019s work, including \u201cKnife in the Water,\u201d \u201cChinatown\u201d and \u201cThe Pianist.\u201d The festival runs from Sept. 24 to Oct. 4.
\nThe Swiss Directors Association sharply criticized authorities for what it deemed \u201cnot only a grotesque farce of justice, but also an immense cultural scandal.\u201d<\/p>\n
