The Lutheran Church of Australia at its triennial convention voted \u201cno\u201d on women\u2019s ordination.<\/p>\n

This was the fourth time the issue was brought up\u00a0(also in 2000, 2006 and 2015).\u00a0 Last time, the measure failed by only 13 votes.\u00a0 This time the margin was much larger.<\/p>\n

An earlier pastors\u2019 conference voted it down, but the general convention makes the decision.\u00a0 It is dominated by laypeople\u2013I believe with 2\/3 lay delegates and 1\/3 pastors\u00a0 (someone correct me if I have that wrong)\u2013and the pro-women\u2019s ordination side had considerable institutional support.\u00a0 But changes in church practice involving doctrine require a two-thirds vote.<\/p>\n

In 2015, 64% of the 400+ delegates voted to allow women to be pastors, 34% voting \u201cno.\u201d\u00a0 This time 59% of the delegates voted to ordain women, with 40% voting against it.\u00a0 That\u2019s a margin of 30 votes, if my math is right.<\/p>\n

At any rate, a majority of the delegates wanted or ordain women, so the church remains divided on the issue.\u00a0 But still, this vote was significant.<\/p>\n
