part, because it provoked the big march against guns.\u00a0 And is climate change a specific news event, or a general trend?\u00a0 Or a cause to acknowledge?\u00a0 Do you see any agendas here?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">Now let\u2019s look at a list from Fox News, the leading conservative news source.\u00a0 This focuses on \u201cpolitical moments,\u201d but I think it is comparable, even though it lists only 7 top stories instead of 10.\u00a0 Unlike the AP list, these do not appear to be in any particular order.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"headline\"><a the Kavanaugh hearing and the midterm election.\u00a0 The AP cites the Mueller investigation of President Trump, but Fox focuses on a specific individual whom the investigation sent to prison.\u00a0 The Fox list shows an international awareness, plus the emergence of a political star on the left.\u00a0 But in the midst of these serious stories is something completely trivial.\u00a0 Who cares that President Trump had a meeting with Kim Kardashian and her husband Kanye West?\u00a0 How is that a top story?<\/p>\n<p>Here is the top list from <em>Insider News,<\/em> an online magazine associated with <em>Business Insider<\/em>.\u00a0 This \u201cnew media\u201d source is much more international, including tech news.<\/p>\n<section class=\"post-headline-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"post-headline \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisinsider.com\/big-world-news-top-headlines-2018-11\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">10 news stories that gripped the world in 2018 [Insider News]:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"post-headline \">1.Twelve boys and their soccer coach got stranded in a cave in Thailand, and the world rallied to their rescue.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/section>\n<blockquote>\n<section class=\"byline-wrapper col-12\">\n<div class=\"byline \" data-e2e-name=\"byline\">\n<div class=\"byline-content\" data-e2e-name=\"byline-content\">\n<div class=\"byline-row\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"slide-title-text\">2. Facebook\u2019s Cambridge Analytica scandal revealed that more than 50 million people\u2019s personal information was compromised for \u201cresearch.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"slide-title-text\">3.\u00a0 Kim Jong Un announced that North Korea will denuclearize.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"slide-title-text\">4.\u00a0 The net neutrality debate came to a head, and the FCC\u2019s rules were repealed, putting the control back in the internet\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"slide-title-text\">5.\u00a0 The world was engrossed by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford\u2019s testimony in the Brett Kavanaugh hearings.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"slide-title-text\">6.\u00a0 Puerto Rico was left without electricity for 11 months, and the world came together to help.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"slide-title-text\">7.\u00a0 The Castro family\u2019s more than 50-year reign over Cuba came to an end with the election of Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"slide-title-text\">8.\u00a0 This year, Iraqi voters held their first election since driving out the Islamic State.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"slide-title-text\">9. Bitcoin (and other cryptocurrencies) experienced a fall from grace.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"slide-title-text\">10.\u00a0 A royal wedding took place, and the entire world was transfixed as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said \u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<section class=\"byline-wrapper col-12\">\n<div class=\"byline \" data-e2e-name=\"byline\">\n<div class=\"byline-content\" data-e2e-name=\"byline-content\">\n<div class=\"byline-row\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media-arrow-wrapper\" data-e2e-name=\"slide-arrow-media-wrapper\">\n<p>The only story to make all three lists is the Kavanaugh hearing.\u00a0 This also agrees with Fox in mentioning the Kim meeting.\u00a0 I had completely missed the story that a Castro no longer rules Cuba, so I\u2019m glad to learn about that.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of tech, let\u2019s look at Facebook\u2019s year in review.\u00a0 Facebook is not a journalistic enterprise, of course, though it is said to be the source of news for a significant number of Americans.\u00a0 This list is based on traffic\u2013that is, the amount of conversation on the subject posted on Facebook\u2013so it represents the interests of its global online \u201ccommunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/12\/facebooks-2018-year-in-review\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Facebook\u2019s 2018 Year in Review<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>International Women\u2019s Day:\u00a0<\/b>For the second year in a row, International Women\u2019s Day on March 8 was the #1 most talked about moment of the year. But in 2018, IWD conversation was about more than the day itself. Women and men around the world discussed a wide range of topics, issues and causes related to women.<\/li>\n<li><b>March for Our Lives:<\/b>\u00a0Survivors of the violence in Parkland, Florida announced the March for Our Lives movement on February 18, which drove conversation and action around the world. Over the next month, more than 1 million people showed interest in attending a Facebook Event for March for Our Lives, and more than $2.5 million was raised through Facebook Fundraisers.<\/li>\n<li><b>Civic Engagement:\u00a0<\/b>The Brazilian Presidential Election on October 7 and the US Midterm Elections on November 6 were top moments for conversation about voting and elections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also saw communities join together in celebration of global moments in culture:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>World Cup:\u00a0<\/b>More than 383 million soccer fans from around the world took to Facebook to cheer on their favorite teams through 2.3 billion posts, comments, reactions and shares. France\u2019s World Cup victory on July 15 and England\u2019s Semi-Final match against Croatia on July 11 were two of the top most-discussed moments of the year.<\/li>\n<li><b>Super Bowl 52:<\/b>\u00a0The Philadelphia Eagles secured their first Super Bowl win against the New England Patriots on February 4. More than 62 million people turned to Facebook following Tom Brady\u2019s incomplete Hail Mary pass at the end of the game, and Justin Timberlake\u2019s halftime performance paying tribute to Prince.<\/li>\n<li><b>The Royal Wedding:<\/b>\u00a0The much-anticipated nuptials between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19 connected 42 million people on Facebook who about posted about the ceremony, the newlyweds, and the pomp and circumstance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, people came to Facebook to honor prominent figures who have had a significant impact around the world:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Nelson Mandela 100:<\/b>\u00a0July 18 marked 100 years since Nelson Mandela was born, and millions of people came to Facebook to celebrate Mandela\u2019s life of dedication to human rights and social justice.<\/li>\n<li><b>Keeping Legacies Alive:<\/b>\u00a0The world lost many influential and inspirational people in 2018. From musical icons Aretha Franklin, Avicii, and Dolores O\u2019Riordan of The Cranberries, to scientific visionaries like Stephen Hawking, influential storytellers like Anthony Bourdain and Hollywood stars like Burt Reynolds.
