{"id":41417,"date":"2019-06-06T06:00:45","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T10:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=41417"},"modified":"2019-06-04T06:32:39","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T10:32:39","slug":"death-of-a-great-australian-christian-poet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2019\/06\/death-of-a-great-australian-christian-poet\/","title":{"rendered":"Death of a Great Australian Christian Poet"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2019\/06\/Les-Murray-poet-_20190429.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-42030\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2019\/06\/Les-Murray-poet-_20190429.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"611\" height=\"700\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-australia-48089957\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Les Murray<\/a>, one of Australia\u2019s greatest writers, died a few weeks ago.\u00a0 He described himself as \u201ca subhuman redneck who writes poems.\u201d\u00a0 Others have called him \u201cthe patron saint of misfits\u201d and \u201camongst the greatest English-language poets since Yeats.\u201d\u00a0 It is said that he \u201csang the nation\u2019s landscape, culture and vernacular into being.\u201d\u00a0 (Quotations from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-australia-48089957\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">BBC obituary<\/a>.)\u00a0 He was also an outspoken but jovial conservative, a battler against postmodernism, and a devout Christian.<\/p>\n<p>To give you an idea about Murray, his poetry, his wit, and his wisdom, consider his poem \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetrylibrary.edu.au\/poets\/murray-les\/the-dream-of-wearing-shorts-forever-0560145\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">The Dream of Wearing Shorts Forever<\/a>.\u201d It also showcases his ability to capture the essence of Australia, as the Australian Tourism board recognized when they made this video of him performing part of that poem:<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cPneEIuFF90\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Australia has a tradition of \u201cbush poets\u201d\u2013the sort that gave us \u201cWaltzing Matilda\u201d\u2013and Murray is something like that, living in the outback and writing about distinctive Australian topics with that distinctive Australian language.\u00a0 But his poetry can also be enigmatic and complex.\u00a0 Imagine T. S.
