{"id":42239,"date":"2019-06-18T06:00:54","date_gmt":"2019-06-18T10:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=42239"},"modified":"2019-06-18T07:24:44","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T11:24:44","slug":"finding-faith-by-studying-the-underclass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2019\/06\/finding-faith-by-studying-the-underclass\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding Faith by Studying the Down-and-Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2019\/06\/1024px-Homeless_man_sleeping_at_the_Colorado_Supreme_Court_Building.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-42291\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2019\/06\/1024px-Homeless_man_sleeping_at_the_Colorado_Supreme_Court_Building.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chris Arnade studied the most destitute and seemingly hopeless Americans\u2013street people, addicts, prostitutes, the wretchedly poor, the \u201cunderclass,\u201d people often referred to as the \u201cdregs of society\u201d\u2013searching for the shreds of human dignity that they still have by getting to know them.\u00a0 And a funny thing happened:\u00a0 He came to faith.<\/p>\n<p>From a review by Kathryn Jean Lopez of Arnade\u2019s book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B079WNP94J\/ref=nosim\/nationalreviewon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\"><em>Dignity: Seeing Respect in Back Row America:<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<div class=\"article-header__meta\">\n<div class=\"article-header__meta-byline\">\n<div class=\"article-header__meta-author-container\">\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>After attending \u201chundreds of different services [with his subjects in the course of his study],\u201d he \u201ccouldn\u2019t ignore the value in faith, not as a scientist, not as a person who claimed to want to learn from others.\u201d At first, he saw it as a \u201cutility,\u201d but \u201cthere was more to it than that,\u201d he realized. \u201cMy biases, my years steeped in rationality and privilege, [were] limiting a deeper understanding.\u201d Perhaps, he writes, \u201creligion was right, or at least as right as anything could be.\u201d But, he admits, \u201cgetting there requires a level of intellectual humility that I am not sure I have\u201d \u2014 which sounds more than a little bit like humility.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--native ad-unit--ad-slot-rendered\">\n<div class=\"ad-unit__inner\">\n<div class=\"hide-for-subscribers\">\n<div id=\"unruly-native-base-placement-945342\">\n<div class=\"unruly_in_article_placement\" data-unruly-ad-type=\"horizontal\">\u00a0He explains that he was used to thinking he had all the answers \u2014 the luxury of delusion. \u201cWith a great job and a great apartment in a great neighborhood, it is easy to feel we have nothing for which we need to be absolved. The fundamental fallibility of humans seems outdated, distant, and confined to a few distant others. It\u2019s not hard to imagine that you can have everything under control.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>But there is no such delusion on the streets he spent time on:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You cannot ignore death there, and you cannot ignore human fallibility. It is easier to see that everyone is a sinner, everyone is fallible, and everyone is mortal. It is easier to see that there are things just too deep, too important, or too great for us to know. It is far easier to recognize that one must come to peace with the idea that \u201cwe don\u2019t and never will have this under control.\u201d\u00a0It is far easier to see religion not just as useful but as true.<\/p>\n<p>.\u00a0.\u00a0. Their communities have been shattered, their sense of place and purpose ruptured, leaving them with no confidence in \u2018worldly\u2019 institutions and with a clearer sense of the importance, value, and necessity of faith in something beyond material.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But doesn\u2019t this go against the fact that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2018\/02\/why-dont-churches-try-to-reach-the-biggest-demographic-of-the-unchurched\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">working classes are the most unchurched<\/a> in America?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 That\u2019s the <em>white<\/em> working class.\u00a0 Many of the people he was studying and going to store front churches with are black.\u00a0 And African Americans are the most religious demographic in America.\u00a0 Plus, these folks Arnade is writing about are not \u201cworking class.\u201d\u00a0 They typically don\u2019t have jobs.\u00a0 So they don\u2019t fit into the American economic class system, such as it is, either.<\/p>\n<p>Does this experience contradict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2019\/06\/the-salt-of-the-earth-vs-the-sugar-of-the-earth\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">what we blogged about yesterday?<\/a>\u00a0 Arnade seems to have taken on a \u201chumanitarian\u201d project, and he refuses to judge these folks.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m interested especially in the impact that these people and this side of life had on the thoroughly middle class Arnade, with his Ph.D. and social standing.\u00a0 Does this suggest that Luther\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2009\/01\/theology-of-the-cross-definition\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Theology of the Cross<\/a> can play a role in evangelism?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 120px; height: 240px;\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ss&amp;ref=as_ss_li_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=cranach00-20&amp;language=en_US&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=0525534733&amp;asins=0525534733&amp;linkId=02510ae7558a761d8b1714131a049a63&amp;show_border=true&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=true\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo:\u00a0 Homeless Man Sleeping at the Colorado Supreme Court Building \u00a9 O&amp;#039;Dea at Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 [CC BY-SA 4.0 (https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0)]<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Arnade studied the most destitute and seemingly hopeless Americans\u2013street people, addicts, prostitutes, the wretchedly poor, the \u201cunderclass,\u201d people often referred to as the \u201cdregs of society\u201d\u2013searching for the shreds of human dignity that they still have by getting to know them.\u00a0 And a funny thing happened:\u00a0 He came to faith.
