{"id":43455,"date":"2019-08-16T06:00:48","date_gmt":"2019-08-16T10:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=43455"},"modified":"2019-08-16T04:18:42","modified_gmt":"2019-08-16T08:18:42","slug":"not-just-catechesis-but-fortification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2019\/08\/not-just-catechesis-but-fortification\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Just Catechesis but Fortification"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2019\/08\/bullying-3096216_1280.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-43476\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2019\/08\/bullying-3096216_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many Christians lose their faith not because of a spiritual crisis or intellectual doubts but because they cannot handle the social pressure often exerted against believers.\u00a0 When they encounter opposition to Christianity from their friends, their colleagues, or the social set they aspire to, instead of holding on to or contending for their faith, they give it up.\u00a0 It follows that Christians today, especially young people, need from the church not only catechesis but <em>fortification<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So says David French in his National Review piece\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2019\/08\/another-pop-culture-christian-loses-his-faith\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Another Pop-Culture Christian Loses His Faith<\/a>.\u00a0 He is discussing Marty Sampson, the former worship leader of Hillsong and writer of a host of popular \u201cpraise songs,\u201d who, like Josh Harris, recently announced that he is leaving Christianity.\u00a0 (Actually, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christiantoday.com\/article\/i-havent-renounced-my-faith-but-its-on-incredibly-shaky-ground-says-marty-sampson\/133025.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sampson now says<\/a> he hasn\u2019t renounced Christianity completely, just that his faith is on \u201cincredibly shaky ground,\u201d as he struggles between the Christian apologists\u2019 arguments and the New Atheists\u2019 arguments.\u00a0 So pray for him.\u00a0 But what\u2019s the problem with approaching faith in terms of which side makes the best rational case?)<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>French puzzles over the particular difficulties that Sampson cites.\u00a0 The Australian singer and recording artist says that \u201cno one talks about\u201d the fall of preachers, the absence of miracles, the contradictions in the Bible, the problem of evil, etc..\u00a0 And yet, as French says, his evangelical church talks about those things all the time!\u00a0 (I would add that the historical church all through the ages has much to say about them.\u00a0 Perhaps Sampson\u2019s particular <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/pentecostal' target='_blank'>Pentecostal<\/a> church, Hillsong, does not, favoring instead the unbridled happy-talk that characterizes not only the prosperity gospel but other strains of contemporary Christianity, as reflected in so many of the praise songs that have been Sampson\u2019s bread and butter.\u00a0 Preparing Christians to live in the fallen world will require churches to be realistic, as historic Christianity always is.)<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, in the course of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2019\/08\/another-pop-culture-christian-loses-his-faith\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">his discussion<\/a>, all of which is worth reading, French says this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As our culture changes, secularizes, and grows less tolerant of Christian orthodoxy, I\u2019m noticing a pattern in many of the people who fall away (again, only Sampson knows his heart): They\u2019re retreating from faith not because they\u2019re ignorant of its key tenets and lack the necessary intellectual, theological depth but rather because the\u00a0<em>adversity<\/em>\u00a0of adherence to increasingly countercultural doctrine grows too great.<\/p>\n<p>Put another way, the failure of the church isn\u2019t so much of catechesis but of fortification \u2014 of building the pure moral courage and resolve to live your faith in the face of cultural headwinds.<\/p>\n<p>In my travels around the country, one thing has become crystal clear to me. Christians are not prepared for the social consequences of the profound cultural shifts \u2014 especially in more secular parts of the nation. They\u2019re afraid to say what they believe, not because they face the kind of persecution that Christians face overseas but because they\u2019re simply not prepared for any meaningful adverse consequences in their careers or with their peers.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--native ad-unit--ad-slot-rendered\">\n<div class=\"ad-unit__inner\">\n<div class=\"hide-for-subscribers\">\n<div>\u00a0What would \u201cfortification\u201d look like?\u00a0 Well, you tell me.\u00a0 But here are my thoughts on the subject. . . .<\/div>\n<div id=\"unruly-native-base-placement-645304\">\n<p>Young Christians need to know <em>what to expect<\/em>\u00a0when they confess this faith.\u00a0 They need to understand the consequences they will face and to cultivate the discipline to meet opposition with courage, strength, and grace.\u00a0 This will need to go beyond\u2013though it should include\u2013countering arguments, since the pressures they will feel usually have little to do with arguments.\u00a0 Fortification will entail \u201ccounting the cost\u201d\u00a0 (Luke 14:25-33) and building the Biblical virtue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/quicksearch\/?quicksearch=endurance&amp;qs_version=ESV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">endurance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Bible has much to say about persevering in the faith.\u00a0 We need to study, for example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew+13&amp;version=ESV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Parable of the Sower<\/a> in Matthew 13, which describes the one who \u201c<span id=\"en-ESV-23560\" class=\"text Matt-13-21\"><span class=\"woj\">endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately\u00a0he falls away\u201d and the one \u201c<\/span><\/span><span id=\"en-ESV-23561\" class=\"text Matt-13-22\"><span class=\"woj\">who hears the word, but\u00a0the cares of\u00a0the world and\u00a0the deceitfulness of riches choke the word.\u201d Churches need to teach about tribulation, persecution, the cares of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches.\u00a0 Very often in contemporary Christianity, in Sampson\u2019s terms, \u201cno one talks about\u201d those.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I suspect that the Reformed doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints, in the common evangelical version of \u201conce saved always saved\u201d has become a matter of complacency, as if now that I am a Christian, I should just be able to cruise my way to Heaven.\u00a0 Whereas the Bible indicates that the life of the Christian will be one of struggle and conflict.\u00a0 (Actual Reformed believers of the past tended to understand that point very well, as did Lutherans and others who believe that it is possible <em>not<\/em> to persevere, so as to lose one\u2019s faith entirely.)<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the Bible says much about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/quicksearch\/?quicksearch=endurance&amp;qs_version=ESV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">endurance:\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>both enduring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke+21%3A10-18&amp;version=ESV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">persecution\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0enduring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+5%3A3-5&amp;version=ESV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">suffering<\/a> (a major problem for contemporary Christians today, not just understanding intellectually why God allows suffering, but and in dealing with their own sufferings faithfully).<\/p>\n<p>The Book of Hebrews suggests one way of teaching this \u201cfortification.\u201d\u00a0 The author gives a great catalogue of Biblical saints, presenting them as exemplars of a faith that prevailed despite overwhelming trials (Hebrews 11).\u00a0 He then concludes with this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"text Heb-12-1\">Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and\u00a0sin which clings so closely, and\u00a0let us run\u00a0with endurance the race that is\u00a0set before us,<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-30198\" class=\"text Heb-12-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">\u00a0<\/sup>looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,\u00a0who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising\u00a0the shame, and\u00a0is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In his books <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2KCatAt\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Why Johnny Can\u2019t Tell Right from Wrong<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2H8LqT8\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\">Books That Build Character: A Guide to Teaching Your Child Moral Values Through Stories,<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>Christian educator William Kirk Kilpatrick says that the traditional way of teaching virtues and building character was through stories.\u00a0 An engaging account of human beings in action, whether fictional or drawn from real life, can inspire children to emulate the characters they most admire.\u00a0 \u201cI want to be like\u201d that hero or that heroine, they feel, and, conversely, they do not want to be like the villain, whose actions they come to despise.<\/p>\n<p>Moral education and character formation are not just matters of informing the students intellectually about what is right and wrong.\u00a0 They also need to be motivated, from the inside, to embrace what is right and to reject what is wrong.\u00a0 There are limits to our ability to be so motivated, given our sinful condition, and, ultimately, only Christ and the Gospel can give us the inner transformation we need.\u00a0 And yet, engaging the moral imagination can be helpful in internalizing the Law in its various uses.<\/p>\n<p>The author of the Book of Hebrews is offering the stirring account of the saints as a way to encourage not so much our morality but our <em>faith<\/em>.\u00a0 Specifically, to encourage us to \u201crun with endurance\u201d the life of faith.\u00a0 We do that not with our own strength or character but by continually \u201clooking to Jesus,\u201d who has both authored our faith and who will perfect it, as, in the face of all trials,\u00a0 we hold fast to Him.\u00a0 Examples of other Christians who have done this can be helpful in inspiring us as well.<\/p>\n<p>This also shows the importance of the church.\u00a0 In resisting negative social pressure, a key factor is having positive social support.\u00a0 Being part of a Christian community, having Christian friends, and having Christian colleagues can make the disapproval of the world seem irrelevant.\u00a0 Conversely, becoming alienated from one\u2019s Christian community, for whatever reason, can make a person look to the world for a sense of belonging.\u00a0 So making our churches more close-knit and more personally involving\u2013including building up an identity in solidarity with Christians of the past in the historic church\u2013does wonders in fortifying Christians.<\/p>\n<p>How else can we cultivate \u201cfortification\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 120px;
