{"id":50111,"date":"2020-07-13T06:00:05","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T10:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=50111"},"modified":"2020-07-13T08:42:49","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T12:42:49","slug":"the-art-of-the-cranachs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2020\/07\/the-art-of-the-cranachs\/","title":{"rendered":"The Art of the Cranachs"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2020\/07\/Cranach_Lucas_I_-_Self_portret_-_Schloss_Stolzenfels-e1594241058214.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50165\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2020\/07\/Cranach_Lucas_I_-_Self_portret_-_Schloss_Stolzenfels-e1594241058214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"577\" height=\"447\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I came across a marvelous documentary about the patron of this blog, Lucas Cranach, along with his son Lucas Cranach the Younger, and the innovative workshop that allowed them to mass produce their art.\u00a0 The film is an English version of a German production\u2013made by the German public broadcasting company Deutsche Welle (DW)\u2013and its quality is first-rate.<\/p>\n<p>It shows the Cranachs\u2019 works, their historical context in Wittenberg, the churches whose altarpieces they painted, and what contemporary technology reveals about their composition.\u00a0 The documentary also focuses on Cranach\u2019s relationship with Luther and how he became the painter of the Reformation, depicting ordinary people and individual parishioners in a direct, personal relationship with Jesus Christ by means of the Word, the Sacraments, and the Cross.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>Lucas Cranach is a very big deal in the art world, more so than in the past.\u00a0 One of the experts praises him as being \u201cmore modern\u201d than the other Renaissance painters.\u00a0 For one thing, his portraits are highly realistic and full of life, as opposed to the idealism of the Italians.\u00a0 And now his son, Lucas Cranach the Younger, is also getting attention as a great artist in his own right.\u00a0 The documentary shows why.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the blurb from DW Documentary:<\/p>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"style-scope ytd-expander\">\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"description\" class=\"style-scope ytd-video-secondary-info-renderer\"><span class=\"style-scope yt-formatted-string\" dir=\"auto\">The history of renaissance art features lavish artworks with religious motifs.
