{"id":52436,"date":"2020-12-09T06:00:02","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T11:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=52436"},"modified":"2020-12-05T15:54:55","modified_gmt":"2020-12-05T20:54:55","slug":"what-the-name-jesus-reveals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2020\/12\/what-the-name-jesus-reveals\/","title":{"rendered":"What the Name &#8220;Jesus&#8221; Reveals"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2020\/12\/st-mary-1347105_1280.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52492\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2020\/12\/st-mary-1347105_1280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why did God name His Son \u201cJesus\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>David Mathis has written a wonderful meditation on that question entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.desiringgod.org\/articles\/the-name-god-gave-his-son\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Name God Gave His Son.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0 He found that the very name of Jesus is, in effect (my words) a creed, a confession of who Jesus is and what He has accomplished for us.<\/p>\n<p>The name we transliterate as \u201cJesus\u201d is, in Hebrew, \u201cYeshua.\u201d\u00a0 This is the same name that we transliterate in the Old Testament as \u201cJoshua.\u201d\u00a0 Moses led the people through the wilderness, but he could not bring them into the Promised Land.\u00a0 That task is reserved for Joshua.\u00a0 I can\u2019t help but notice the symbolism:\u00a0 Moses (the Law) is unable to bring us to Heaven.\u00a0 For that we need Yeshua (the Gospel).<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>Moreover, the word \u201cYeshua\u201d means \u201cYahweh saves.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus is \u201cYahweh\u201d in the flesh.\u00a0 And He has come to save us.<\/p>\n<p>Mathis explores the text in Scripture that states what God wants His son to be named and what that name means:\u00a0 \u201cThe angel told Joseph, \u2018<span id=\"en-ESV-23166\" class=\"text Matt-1-21\">you shall call his name Jesus,\u00a0for he will save his people from their sins'\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 (Matthew 1:21).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Yeshua<\/em>\u00a0means\u00a0<em>Yahweh saves<\/em>. That this unique child\u2019s name would be\u00a0<em>Yahweh saves<\/em>\u00a0was understandable for Joseph. Of course, God\u2019s people needed saving \u2014\u00a0<em>from the Gentiles<\/em>. From the Romans who ruled over them; from local puppets of Caesar, like Herod and Pilate. . . .<\/p>\n<p>Then the bombshell: \u201che will save his people\u00a0<em>from their sins<\/em>.\u201d Not from the enemies, but from their sin. He will save them from themselves.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And there is another bombshell:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Here, see him in a manger laid, this is Yahweh himself among us, to rescue us. This is Yahweh saving us not through sending a mere human vessel but through becoming human himself, in the person of his eternal divine Son, and going all the way to death, even death on a cross, to liberate us from\u00a0<em>exceedingly more<\/em>\u00a0than temporal, earthly oppression \u2014 from sin and Satan and death itself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So the very name of Jesus is a confession of His deity and His saving work.<\/p>\n<p>There is much more that Matthis gets into, including what the angel reveals to Mary about what she is to name her child and what He will be \u201ccalled.\u201d\u00a0 So read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desiringgod.org\/articles\/the-name-god-gave-his-son\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">whole reflection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>(I know, I know, I should have saved this post for January 1, the day of the church year in which we commemorate the Circumcision and Name of Jesus.\u00a0 But that\u2019s also New Year\u2019s Day, when by long custom, we post your predictions for the year ahead.\u00a0 I am looking forward to New Year\u2019s Eve, in which we will check your predictions to see if anybody predicted the coronavirus epidemic or any of the other strange happenings of this year.\u00a0 I am hoping the prognosis for 2021 will be much better.\u00a0 You might be thinking about what you think will happen.\u00a0 Anyway, contemplating the name of the baby in the manger is also fitting for Advent\u2013seeing Him as the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises\u2013and for Christmas.)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Image by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/users\/murati-1989803\/?utm_source=link-attribution&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=image&amp;utm_content=1347105\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Murat ilgarlar<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/?utm_source=link-attribution&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=image&amp;utm_content=1347105\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pixabay<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The very name of Jesus, which means &#8220;Yahweh Saves,&#8221;
