Time was, American ideas that were exported around the world had to do with freedom and democracy.\u00a0 Today, the American ideas we are exporting are critical theory, political correctness, and \u201cwoke\u201d ideology.\u00a0 And some countries are pushing back.<\/p>\n

France especially is objecting.\u00a0 The New York Times has published an article by\u00a0Norimitsu Onishi entitled\u00a0Will American Ideas Tear France Apart? Some of Its Leaders Think So<\/a>\u00a0with the deck, \u201cPoliticians and prominent intellectuals say social theories from the United States on race, gender and post-colonialism are a threat to French identity and the French republic.\u201d\u00a0 Here is the lead:<\/p>\n

The threat is said to be existential. It fuels secessionism. Gnaws at national unity. Abets Islamism. Attacks\u00a0France<\/a>\u2019s intellectual and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

The threat? \u201cCertain social science theories entirely imported from the United States,\u2019\u2019\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0President\u00a0Emmanuel Macron<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Macron is far from being a conservative.\u00a0 But when French protesters started emulating the Americans during the George Floyd protests, Macron said, as quoted in an article by Jarrett Stepman<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cthe [French] republic will not erase any trace, or any name, from its history \u2026 it will not take down any statue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Macron\u2019s education minister, Jean-Michel Blanquer, issued a statement calling on French schools and universities to resist this ideology.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s a battle to wage against an intellectual matrix from American universities,\u2019\u2019 he said.\u00a0 One hundred French intellectuals wrote an open letter supporting the statement and expressing opposition to theories\u00a0\u201ctransferred from North American campuses.\u201d\u00a0 Two prominent French scholars published a book entitled\u00a0Race et Sciences Sociales<\/a> (Race and the Social Sciences<\/em>), critiquing the way the often subjective and culturally-constructed\u00a0 concept of race has come to dominate the social sciences.<\/p>\n

This is ironic, of course, since French thinkers gave us post-modernism, which is the starting point for \u201cwoke\u201d ideology.\u00a0 (See our post on Michel Foucault<\/a>.)\u00a0 And, to be sure, some professors and students at French universities, who have indeed been influenced by American academics, are the source of the current concern.<\/p>\n

But Macron and company are not just indulging in another kind of anti-Americanism.\u00a0 France, whose egalitarian ideals<\/a> do not permit the government to so much as collect data about the race of its citizens, is still facing a serious problem with Islamic terrorists, who are murdering journalists who do not show due respect for Mohammed and committing other attacks against French citizens.<\/p>\n

And, as a Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u00a0editorial points out<\/a>, the terrorists are justifying their actions by using this same anti-Western sentiment, \u201cpost-colonial\u201d discourse, and \u201cwoke\u201d rhetoric.\u00a0 In having to defend democratic ideals such as free speech, artistic freedom, and individual rights, Macron and others must<\/em> oppose the new American ideology, with its cancel culture and illiberal values.<\/p>\n

The backlash against woke ideology is also taking place in Great Britain<\/a>\u00a0and other European nations, particularly among the young.<\/a><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, China<\/a>\u00a0has started to use woke ideology and rhetoric in its propaganda to describe\u00a0 the evils of America.<\/p>\n
