{"id":5636,"date":"2010-05-25T05:00:39","date_gmt":"2010-05-25T09:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geneveith.com\/?p=5636"},"modified":"2010-05-25T05:00:39","modified_gmt":"2010-05-25T09:00:39","slug":"will-the-korean-war-break-out-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2010\/05\/will-the-korean-war-break-out-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Will the Korean War break out again?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The Korean War of the 1950s has never officially ended.\u00a0 Now South Korea, after decades of restraint, is getting tough with its Stalinist neighbor to the North, responding to a deadly torpedo attack on one of its ships that killed 46 South Koreans:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said Monday that his country is stopping all trade and most investment with North Korea and closing its sea lanes to North Korean ships after the nation&amp;apos;s deadly attack on a South Korean warship.<\/p>\n<p>Lee also called for a change in the North\u2019s Stalinist regime.<\/p>\n<p>The tough measures, announced in an address to his nation, were bound to ratchet up pressure on the isolated Pyongyang government and add a new flash point in U.S. relations with China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFellow citizens, we have always tolerated North Korea\u2019s brutality, time and again. We did so because we have always had a genuine longing for peace on the Korean Peninsula,\u201d he said. \u201cBut now things are different. North Korea will pay a price corresponding to its provocative acts.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\nLee then said that \u201cno North Korean ship will be allowed to make passage through any of the shipping lanes in the waters under our control\u201d and that \u201cany inter-Korean trade or other cooperative activity is meaningless.\u201d\n<p>via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/05\/23\/AR2010052301712.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">South Korea to halt all trade with North Korea over sinking of Cheonan warship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, American forces have announced a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/37309788\/ns\/world_news-asiapacific\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">joint military exercise<\/a> to put on a show of force designed to \u201cdeter North Korean aggression.\u201d  The big question is what China will do.  The even bigger question, of course, is what North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il will do.  He has threatened war over lesser confrontations and is utterly unstable and unpredictable.
