There is overwhelming suffering in the world today.\u00a0 Here are some ways you can help.<\/p>\n

The Office of International Missions<\/a> of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is working with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ukraine (ELCU), along with partner churches in Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Germany, and the Czech Republic, to provide help for refugees of the war.<\/p>\n

From the LCMS website<\/a>:<\/p>\n

The Rev. Serge Maschewski, bishop of the ELCU, requests funds for medicine; fuel for the evacuation of children, women and the elderly; food; and personal safety gear for pastors who work in dangerous areas.<\/p>\n

\n

Maschewski said that the needs are always changing: \u201cI don\u2019t know the exact amount of money. Today we need food. Tomorrow we need medicine. The list changes daily.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the Lutheran church bodies in Ukraine is the Ukrainian Lutheran Church<\/a>, which is in fellowship with the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS)<\/a> and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian Lutheran Church is particularly interesting because it is an example of Byzantine Rite Lutheranism<\/a>, which, while highly confessional, uses a liturgy that draws on that of Eastern Orthodoxy.<\/p>\n

Ukraine is not the only place in the world facing catastrophic suffering.\u00a0 Regions of war torn Ethiopia are now also facing a devastating drought and consequent famine.\u00a0 The world\u2019s largest Lutheran church body, Mekane Yesus (place of Jesus), is working to save some 420,000 people from starvation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation is heartbreaking and painful,\u201d said Yishak Yohanes Dera, president of the South Ethiopia Synod of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (Place of Jesus).<\/p>\n

As the senior official of one of Ethiopia\u2019s leading Protestant churches, with more than 10 million members, Dera is appealing for help to prevent starvation in four of country\u2019s low-lying regions. They are in the grip of a devastating drought.<\/p>\n

He is talking to aid agencies, faith-based organizations, and government bodies, asking them to \u201ccome to Borena and save the lives of our people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
