{"id":6078,"date":"2010-08-06T05:26:13","date_gmt":"2010-08-06T09:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geneveith.com\/?p=6078"},"modified":"2010-08-06T05:26:13","modified_gmt":"2010-08-06T09:26:13","slug":"the-spilled-oil-is-gone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2010\/08\/the-spilled-oil-is-gone\/","title":{"rendered":"The spilled oil is gone?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>As workers finally manage to cap the leaking oil well in the Gulf, some scientists have reached conclusions about what happened to all of that spilled oil:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nearly three-fourths of oil from the BP (BP.L)(BP.N) spill is gone from the Gulf of Mexico, with 26 percent remaining as a sheen or tarballs, buried in sediment or washed ashore, U.S. scientists said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is estimated that burning, skimming and direct recovery from the wellhead removed one quarter (25 percent) of the oil released from the wellhead,\u201d the scientists said in the report \u201cBP Deepwater Horizon Oil Budget: What Happened to the Oil?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another 25 percent naturally evaporated or dissolved and 24 percent was dispersed, either naturally or \u201cas the result of operations,\u201d into small droplets, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the estimated 4.9 million barrels of crude spilled into the Gulf after the April 20 rig explosion that triggered the leak is either on or just beneath the water\u2019s surface as \u201clight sheen or weathered tarballs,\u201d has washed ashore where it may have been collected, or is buried in sand and sediments at the sea bottom.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\nThe report found 33 percent of the oil has been dealt with by the Unified Command, which includes government and private efforts.\n<p>\u201cThis includes oil that was captured directly from the wellhead by the riser pipe insertion tube and top hat systems (17 percent), burning (5 percent), skimming (3 percent) and chemical dispersion (8 percent),\u201d the report found.<\/p>\n<p>Natural processes broke down the rest of the 74 percent that has been removed from the Gulf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good news is that the vast majority of the oil appears to be gone,\u201d Carol Browner, energy and climate change adviser to President Barack Obama, said on ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s what the initial assessment of our scientists is telling us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSN0424782620100804\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">UPDATE 3-Nearly 3\/4 of BP spill oil gone from Gulf | Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So no catastrophe, no greatest environmental disaster of all time.\u00a0 A financial disaster for BP to be sure, and the mess had to be taken care of.\u00a0\u00a0 But man and nature seem to have been able to take care of it.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE:  Other scientists are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/08\/04\/AR2010080407082.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">questioning<\/a> this rosy picture from the Obama administration, saying the findings are based on computer projections rather than actual measurement and that the toxicity of what remains is not known.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote><\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As workers finally manage to cap the leaking oil well in the Gulf, some scientists have reached conclusions about what happened to all of that spilled oil: Nearly three-fourths of oil from the BP (BP.L)(BP.N) spill is gone from the Gulf of Mexico, with 26 percent remaining as a sheen or tarballs, buried in sediment [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1281,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[33],"tags":[972],"class_list":["post-6078","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-nature","tag-gulf-oil-spill"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
