On December 15, the Log Cabin Republicans\u2013an organization of homosexual members of the GOP\u2013held a gala celebrating the group\u2019s 45th anniversary and President Biden\u2019s recent signing of the same-sex marriage law.\u00a0 The event was held at the Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, and was hosted by Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

As the attendees lauded the 45th president for his support for gay rights, he gave a speech.\u00a0 Here is an excerpt, including these words, as reported by Politico<\/em> in Scenes from a celebration of the same-sex marriage law \u2014 at Mar-a-Lago<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are fighting for the gay community, and we are fighting and fighting hard,\u201d the former president and 2024 candidate said. \u201cWith the help of many of the people here tonight in recent years, our movement has taken incredible strides, the strides you\u2019ve made here is incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cOur movement\u201d?<\/p>\n

My question:\u00a0 Is Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cfighting for the gay community\u201d generally known?\u00a0 Do Trump\u2019s evangelical supporters and all the other social conservatives realize where he stands on this issue?<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s pro-gay sympathies are nothing new.\u00a0 Remember how he unfurled the Rainbow Flag<\/a> emblazoned with the words \u201cLGBTs for Trump.\u201d\u00a0 And his convention address<\/a> upon receiving the GOP nomination for president in which he vowed \u201cto protect our LGBTQ citizens.\u201d\u00a0 And in response to the applause this elicited, added,\u00a0 \u201cAnd I have to say, as a Republican, it is so nice to hear you cheering for what I just said. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

To be sure, he was referring to the Islamic terrorist attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando in which 49 people were killed.\u00a0 He said he would protect LBGTQ citizens \u201cfrom the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0That pledge was completely appropriate.\u00a0 Perhaps listeners considered this to be an anti-Islamist comment, rather than a pro-LGBTQ comment.\u00a0 But it was both.\u00a0 At any rate, gay conservatives<\/a> have always praised him<\/a>, in the words of the Politico<\/em> article, \u201cfor his embrace of the gay community.\u201d\u00a0 (See this<\/a> for Trump\u2019s record on the subject.)<\/p>\n

There is nothing unusual in this.\u00a0 After all, 55% of Republicans<\/a> support gay marriage.<\/p>\n

But for Christian nationalists and nationalist conservatives, same-sex marriage and the rise of the LGBTQ movement are symptoms of the moral and cultural decline they seek to reverse.\u00a0 And they consider Donald Trump to be their standard-bearer and the strong leader who can put things right.\u00a0 Are those folks unaware of Trump\u2019s support for the \u201cgay community\u201d?<\/p>\n

The Left has unfairly and inaccurately demonized Trump for not<\/em> supporting gay rights.\u00a0 They, of course, play to their progressive base.\u00a0 But could it be that those false allegations, intended as criticism, may have been taken in the wrong way by cultural conservatives, making them think that Trump agrees with them on cultural issues?\u00a0 Was the Left thus responsible for electing Trump in 2016?<\/p>\n
