{"id":65502,"date":"2023-03-06T06:00:18","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T11:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=65502"},"modified":"2023-03-04T13:46:53","modified_gmt":"2023-03-04T18:46:53","slug":"a-cranach-miscellany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2023\/03\/a-cranach-miscellany\/","title":{"rendered":"A Cranach Miscellany"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2023\/03\/cranach-seal.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-65538\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2023\/03\/cranach-seal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"276\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So much to blog about!\u00a0 So little time!\u00a0 So much of interest, yet I don\u2019t always have much to say about them!<\/p>\n<p>So I want to experiment with a new feature on this blog:\u00a0 short bits of information, oddities, and observations.\u00a0 A \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/miscellany\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">miscellany<\/a>,\u201d which means\u00a0\u201ca miscellaneous collection or group of various or somewhat unrelated items.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I might do this weekly, I might do it occasionally, or I might never do it again, depending on how you like it.\u00a0 Here goes:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/elon-musk-richard-dawkins-criticism-of-matauranga-maori-in-schools-faces-backlash-from-kiwi-researcher\/QQWSKLTDF5DCTETX5F3P3RBC5Y\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">New Zealand and Maori Science<\/a>.\u00a0 New Zealand schools must now teach Maori \u201cways of knowing,\u201d grounded in myth and tribal lore, alongside courses in modern science.\u00a0 Militant atheist Richard Dawkins is raising the alarm about this, calling Maori beliefs a form of \u201ccreationism\u201d (the worst critique he can imagine).\u00a0 He has a point, though, that animistic worldviews are not on a par with the scientific method.\u00a0 But this is what happens when we adopt the postmodernist assumptions that there is no objective truth and that knowledge is determined by culture.\u00a0 Throw in critical theory\u2019s concerns about \u201cwhite supremacy\u201d and \u201ccolonialism,\u201d and the science we take for granted and depend on cannot survive.\u00a0 (HT:\u00a0 Bob Foote)<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfla.com\/news\/politics\/florida-bill-would-require-bloggers-who-write-about-governor-to-register-with-the-state\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Florida Registering Bloggers?<\/a> A Republican state legislator in Florida has introduced a law that would require any bloggers who discuss Gov. Ron DeSantis or other state officials to register with the state and file financial reports on any income generated by the posts.\u00a0 Failure to do so could incur a $2500 fine.\u00a0 Newspapers and professional journalists would be exempt.<\/p>\n<p>This would really cramp my style, especially if DeSantis runs for president!\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t think I would fall under Florida jurisdiction, but I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if Oklahoma would extradite me.<\/p>\n<p>This law, on the face of it, would be unconstitutional, especially since it targets the speech of private citizens.\u00a0 And I wonder if it isn\u2019t a serious proposal, but rather an \u201cif this, then why not that\u201d ploy, as in schools responding to Christians\u2019 efforts to ban controversial books by also <a href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/hemant-mehta\/a-texas-school-district-just-banned-the-bible-oops\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">banning the Bible<\/a>.\u00a0 My impression is that the bill had something to do with a proposal to make lobbyists register.\u00a0 If they have to, why not bloggers?<\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t seen anything to suggest that DeSantis himself is actually in favor of this bill.\u00a0 If he is, it would suggest an affinity with \u201cilliberal conservatives\u201d\u2013that is, conservatives opposed to liberty\u2013that would be concerning.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t think this is the case.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/insidethemagic.net\/2023\/02\/guests-lament-carousel-of-progress-jc1\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cancelling the Very Mention of the First Talkie?<\/a>\u00a0 The \u201cCarousel of Progress\u201d ride at Disneyland is being interrogated for its political correctness.\u00a0 The educational ride through the development of American technology at Tomorrowland depicts a character from the 1920\u2019s saying how excited he is to see <em>The Jazz Singer<\/em>, which is the first motion picture with sound.\u00a0 A fan points out that the movie stars Al Jolson and that Jolson appears in blackface.\u00a0 The Guest was \u201cshocked\u201d that the ride mentioned the historically important movie and called for the reference to be removed.<\/p>\n<p>This issue was raised in a Reddit thread and most commenters disagreed with it, and there is no indication that Disney is planning to delete mention of the movie.\u00a0 Except that the complaint was published on Disney\u2019s website Inside the Magic, at the end of which it solicits fans\u2019 reactions.\u00a0 So it looks like the company is testing the waters to see how offended their customers might be.<\/p>\n<p>So far cancel culture forbids saying or depicting anything offensive.
